Last week I noted several polls that seemed to show support for the economic recovery package was dropping, but now we have a couple of new surveys that show a clear jump in public backing for it.
Gallup is now finding that support for the stim package has risen to 59%, up from 52% a week ago. A majority of independents also supports it.
Separately, a new Rasmussen poll finds that support for the package has jumped to 44%, up from 37% last week.
The key here, as Eric Kleefeld notes, is that Rasmussen was the one being cited by opponents of the stim package as proof of eroding support for it. What’s more, Ras polls have consistently found lower support for the package than other surveys.
Both these polls were taken in the last few days, when the package was getting heavy media attention and there was a growing sense that an agreement was getting closer, both of which could have rallied support.
It’s also possible that it took awhile for President Obama’s newly aggressive pro-stimulus campaign to sink in and start working.
