Judd Gregg is the latest victim of stupid maneuvering by the GOP

BREAKING: Judd Gregg's Bipartisan Spirit

by Jed L
Thu Feb 12, 2009 at 01:24:50 PM PST

Looks like GOP hyperpartisanship has claimed another victim: according to MSNBC television, Judd Gregg has just issued a statement saying that because of his opposition to the stimulus plan and his views on handling the census that he is unwilling to serve in President Obama's cabinet.

Big mistake, Senator Gregg. Not only are you skipping out on an opportunity to serve your country, you're putting a big target on your Senate seat in 2010.

Update (1:33PM) -- Boston Globe has more details. Here's the key part of Gregg's statement:

...it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy.

The GOP has prevailed upon Judd Gregg to make one of the strangest and least gracious political decisions of all-time. Not to mention stupid.

1. I see your point
Somehow, it's hard to see him as a victim, unless it's of his own stupidity.

Boy, they're asking to have their butts kicked when they next have to run for office, aren't they?

7. A theory:
Gregg assessed the political landscape and decided it didn't look good for 2010 so he went after a sure thing, knowing that he wasn't really a bipartisan kind of guy (Obama found out). Pressure from his Repuke allies jarred his temporary grip on reality, and confused him enough to return to GOP alternate reality. Problem: 2010 still doesn't look good (what's he hiding?), and now he's out in the cold.

5. Andrew Sullivan nails it
Gregg Was Pwned:

It gets clearer. When Judd Gregg approached the Obama administration to see if he could be a part of it, he was assuming that his own party wasn't going to adopt a policy of total warfare against the newly elected president in a time of enormous economic peril. Between that moment and the current all-out ideological assault on Obama, his position became untenable. His recusal on the stimulus package provoked fury at home (check out the comments here) and dyspepsia among the GOP who are intent on responding to an open hand with a clenched fist.

I have to say even I am a little taken aback by the force of the Republican assault. Even in a downturn as swift and alarming as this one, even after an election that clearly favored one approach over another, even after the most conciliatory efforts by an incoming president in memory, these people have gone to war against the president. The president should stay cool. The rest of us should realize what motivates the GOP: the opportunism of selective ideology.

16. It's a good sign that Judd is leaving.
Shows that he must walk in lock step off the cliff with the rest of the GOP. The solidarity the GOP is showing against everything the Democrats do will put the last nail in the republicans coffin.

during the time the President is at Caterpillar! A company that states it will start to bring back some of it's layed off employee's if the stimulus passes. These fucks need to be dealt with accordingly and immediately!

Edited on Thu Feb-12-09 06:10 PM by rvablue
Just one more example of how Obama extended his hand in bipartisanship and only got a fist in return.

I think that line out of the inaugural address was just as much meant for the GOP as it was for hostile foreign governments.

20. I was thinking the same thing. They can't say they weren't
'included' in any way. Gregg and many repugs are digging themselves deeper into the 'political hole.'
