IF the Stimulus works. The Death Knell of the Republican Party.
The hardcore will be forced to go elsewhere. Start a new party. The Whigs, or something. IF it fails. I have no idea.

2. Unfortunately, with Reid's help, I think they were able to weaken it enough to keep them alive
This package won't work enough to kill them off in 2010, but if we can get another better one then yeah, they're done.

3. The key to success is confidence of the people
Obama is out there instilling confidence among citizens, day in and day out. This will do much to help the success of the recover plan.

4. You are correct
they are deep on the record of saying NO to the stimulus. If this thing works, or if the economy recovers in spite of it, they will be almost wiped out in the 2010 and 2012 elections. It might be FDR 3rd term type numbers.

6. What precisely is the objective of the stimulus?
What measures will be used to gauge whether or not it worked?

If the economy does improve, how will advocates of the stimulus defend it against the inevitable charges that the stimulus was not the cause of the improvement?

(Just a little Devil's Advocacy for discussion.)

I don't think it will. Because I'm pessimistic like that.

What will we look like this time next year?

7. Since all the factories, call centers and jobs are over in Asia.........
I'm certain there will be significant job growth for a relatively short period over THERE. $500.00-$1,000.00 will not change most people's economic world. What's up for plan B? Until factories, call centers and our former jobs are returned to the US, there will be no meaningful sustained recovery; a dead economy bounce is not a recovery.

19. That's impossible. Too expensive. Maybe call centers could be phased back to the US, but not
factories.

25. Then there is no need to waste money on stimulus.
Trade deficits, collapsing dollar, inflation, and NO SUSTAINABLE JOBS will sink our economic ship. Forget national security; the potential enemies are sole sources for everything we need to defend ourselves.

10. It's pretty safe to assume ...
that the stimulus package is a lot like Viagra. The economy will get a hard on just long enough for the Democrats to get phucked in the ass by their own stupidity.

18. No, the argument will then focus on what it means for the Stimulus to have worked.
No matter what happens, they Republicans will then try to prove that it didn't really work.
If there are improvements or even if the economy simply stabilizes, they will say that it would have been much better without the Stimulus.

They'll still have some fight in them.

21. There will always be racist and other haters to fill their ranks and file.
Just like any other sort of terrorist organization the promise of free will and education will not only not eliminate them, but it will guarantee they will have at least those two things to continue their march of hate.

It is just they way they are.

Though if you think about it if we figure a way to finally get rid of terrorism we will also find the key to getting rid of the party of hate.

22. I doubt it. The Republicans will spend the next decade trying
to prove why anything Obama did was a failure especially the stimulus. They have been trying to prove that the New Deal didn't work and that the 90's under Clinton wasn't as good as people thought and if it was it was only because of the Republicans. I really expect nothing less than a nasty, meanspirited pushback from the republicans. They are like roaches they will survive.

24. It's not enough money to "work" in the political sense
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 08:15 AM by high density
It will stave off catastrophe like TARP did last fall, but it won't exactly get our economy roaring again. The Republicans will argue that we spent all this money and it got us nothing, when in reality things would likely be much worse had the stimulus spending not happened as the Republicans preferred.

27. My feeling is they are taking a helluva big risk.
If the stimulus succeeds it will damage them. Not destroy, mind you, but hurt them. Not one House vote. They are rolling the dice.
