3. He was one of the chief architects of free India's constitution

He was born into an 'Untouchable' family, and through sheer grit and determination received a college education, getting degrees in economics and political science. This was in the early 20th century when India was under British colonial rule, and getting an education for any Indian was a challenge, let alone one from the so-called 'Untouchable' castes.

He became India's first law minister after independence in 1947, and was the chief architect of the country's constitution adopted on Jan 26, 1950, making it a democratic republic. He was the prime mover behind the affirmative action laws that are part of the constitution.
