Senator Burris Reverses Statements About Blagojevich Fundraising (Will He Survive?)
EXCERPTS:
Chicago, IL) -- Illinois Democrats have joined their Republican counterparts in calling for a fresh investigation into U.S. Senator Roland Burris.

Burris has made conflicting statements about fundraising for former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich before his appointment to Congress by Blagojevich.

Previously, Burris said he turned down a request by the ex-governor's brother, Robert Blagojevich, to raise political cash for the governor.

According to the "Chicago Tribune," Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, a Democrat, wants a new probe of Burris' interaction with the Blagojevich brothers.

Monday night, Burris admitted he tried to raise money for Blagojevich while he was being considered for the Senate appointment.

I don't think that Burris will survive this... he probably will step down in the next week or so and Gov. Quinn will then appoint JJJ or Valerie Jarrett

1. And people screamed at me when I was pissed about Burris
I knew this was going to be nasty. Tehre was no way a Blagojevich Appointment would survive. It was tainted from day one.

7. Throw him under the bus!
At the time he was confirmed, I first objected because of his proximity to Blago, but then decided that the pissing contest wasn't worth fighting when we had things like a stimulus to get through Congress.

Of course, now that he's been caught perjuring himself, I now think that he's not worth the trouble to try saving.

Don't expect many Democrats to stand with you, Burris. I'd suggest bowing out quietly.

13. Yeah, he perjured himself while testifying to the Illinois legislature.
And yes, IIRC, he was under oath.

Burris is not long for the Senate...

If ever there was a stereotype that fit Burris, it's the born loser image.

12. Do we know ALL the facts here? Does the guy get his day in "court," or do we cruxcify him first and
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 07:31 PM by RBInMaine
ask ALL of the questions later? Do we look closely at everything here, or do we trash the man's entire life and career in one fell swoop? Did he really commit "perjury," or did he answer truthfully, in his mind, at the time? EXACTLY what was he asked? EXACTLY how did he answer? Or do we just suck up a few corporate media soundbites and convict this guy now and ask every question later? C'mon folks. Have we raced to the bottom of civilization this quickly? Maybe he is guilty, but let's see more first. As to Blago, ok, he's out of office, and maybe he damn well should be, but this is still America, he has not been convicted of anything in a court of law yet, and as shitty as it was to even consider saying some of the things he said, there are many more legal hurdles before he can be convicted of a crime. Even the seemingly shittiest person gets a day in court. If that standard is good enough for the Gitmo detainees, it's good enough for Blago and Burris.

15. No, there was no reason to rush an appointment in the first place, and
Burris should have stayed away, like every one else did. Between Burris' egotistical actions and comments a, Blago's trying to use the appointment to help in the case being made against him, and the Repubs rushing to the defense of the appointment. I have had nothing but a bad feeling about this the entire time. This is what the Repubs where hoping for. \

20. This is GDP.
We Crucify and then don't bother to ask questions (it's in the forum bylaws)

In fairness, Mr. Burris deserves his day in court like everyone else, but if he's truly as dirty as we fear, he ought to step down before he humiliates himself, the party and the State of Illinois further.

18. He is expendable now.
The Senate kept him long enough to get the stimulus passed so his job is done. Time to get a real Senator in there.

23. JJJ is radioactive
Do we really want a sitting senator coming to Chicago to testify for a week on people he is snitching against.

JJJ may be clean. Then again, he is an Illinois politician. And none of them are clean. Plus he admits he is cooperating with the US Attorney.

21. I sure hope he doesn't
As I said at the time; honorable men do not accept gifts from criminals. Burris accepted a gift from a crooked man.

Let him resign so the new governor of Ill can appoint someone who is somewhat untainted.
