Obama makes surprise stop at Ottawa market

OTTAWA — President Barack Obama has made a surprise visit to a downtown market in Ottawa, leaving fellow customers stunned. After departing from Parliament, Obama's motorcade stopped at an indoor market where the president drew an enormous cheer from shoppers as he walked through aisles of vendors selling crafts, Chinese noodles and Indian food.

Obama bought a silk scarf from one merchant and maple-leaf shaped cookies — the Canadian symbol — for his young daughters. He paid with Canadian dollars. Obama shook hands and took pictures with customers as he walked through the market.

Inquiring minds want to know: what does US President George W Bush carry in his pockets? Not much, it turns out.

A Latin American journalist at a briefing on the President's trip to the region this week told Mr Bush he wanted to ask the "unofficial" question that he asks all presidents - what does he carry in his pockets?

Mr Bush magnanimously answered by pulling out a white handkerchief with a flourish and then rummaged around in both pockets. Finally, showing that he had nothing to hide, Mr Bush pulled both pants pockets inside out. They were empty.

"Es todo. No dinero," ("That's all. No money.") Mr Bush joked in his own brand of Spanglish. "No wallet, no bolsa (wallet)."

Important detail. Canadians HATE it when Americans come over and try to pay with American money, assuming that all Canadians know the exchange rate. It may sound silly, but it could have caused quite a scandal if Obama had tried to fork over some American bucks.
