2. It a good start.
Now, if they would just shrivel up and die, I could accept their apology as genuine.

5. This means the pressure was too
much for them to bear. I see the 1st poster said it was 1/2 assed..I would expect nothing more.

6. Pathetic.
Like KO said, I can't believe this shit even made it into the paper. And while I've never been a big fan of the NY Post, even so, I feel I have the right to be offended when an atrocity like this is allowed to be published.

25. Close, but not quite.
As I recall, you said that the cartoonist would issue a "half-assed apology":

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8206752&mesg_id=8207044

Near as I can tell, it's the Post's editors that did so. Still, good call on the "Republicanesque" part.

I certainly would be surprised if Deloneass issued any sort of apology--half-assed or otherwise.

11. Eugene Robinson said it was a bizarre "sorry if you were offended" apology...
.
.

I guess that's the best they could do, huh?

12. For the NYP to feel they had to come out with this half-assed, non-apology apology...
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 09:54 PM by Spazito
means the backlash must have been huge and that is the good news, imo. What the NYP actually said is less important than they felt forced to do it.

Thanks to all those who phoned, e-mailed, protested in front of their building, it DOES make a difference.

Edited to add: Just read the full text of the "apology", wow, a vitriolic diatribe that doesn't even come close to a half-assed non-apology apology.

I hope the backlash on this is as great as the backlash on the grotesquely racist hatetoon.

13. I kinda think the 'apology' is almost as offensive as the cartoon....
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 09:21 PM by Jackeens
Wednesday's Page Six cartoon - caricaturing Monday's police shooting of a chimpanzee in Connecticut - has created considerable controversy.

It shows two police officers standing over the chimp's body: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.

It was meant to mock an ineptly written federal stimulus bill.

Period.

But it has been taken as something else - as a depiction of President Obama, as a thinly veiled expression of racism.

This most certainly was not its intent; to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.

However, there are some in the media and in public life who have had differences with The Post in the past - and they see the incident as an opportunity for payback.

To them, no apology is due.

Sometimes a cartoon is just a cartoon - even as the opportunists seek to make it something else.

23. The "apology" only makes it worse. They are really screwing themselves over here.
Even my conservative parents were offended and that is huge.

14. Fuck you. Too late. You defended it until you saw the
throngs of people protesting outside your building, and read about your own staffers being unhappy and embarrassed (to say the least!)

Go fuck yourself you racist pigs.

Failure after daily failure.

22. Please keep up the pressure.
The NY Postal issued a semi-apology. They are hoping it will do the trick. If the public keeps the pressure on, they will be forced to take the next step.

As Vine Deloria, Jr., noted in his book "We Talk, You Listen," there is no system on earth that will not gladly sacrifice one of its own for a moment's peace. Now is not the time to grant that moment of peace. Make them sacrifice one of their own.
