just as the more radical elements took control of the Democratic Party in the late 1960s/early '70s, and drove moderates into the GOP in numbers large enough to produce Reagan, now radical rightists have taken control of the GOP, and been driving them toward the Democrats in droves.
As with the Democrats, the GOP is in denial about their dysfunctional state, so they're gonna go deeper into the woods for a number of years yet. Barring catastrophic overreach by the far-left elements of the Democratic Party, I think we can look forward to a good long run.

13. I have been predicting this for a while, but it seems like the GOPs

are heading for a party split well before I ever imagined it.
I think the moderates will remain republicans, the extreme righties and the "religious" snake handlers will form possibly several parties well to the right of the moderates.
All these new parties will hate and mistrust the others, and will have little or no success trying to get anything done for many years to come.

You'll note I said LATE '60s - the radicalization that began in '68 with the Tet offensive, Cronkite saying we'd lost, etc., and the increasingly strident anti-american rhetoric of many of the protestors. Nothing radical about civil rights at all.

is that there aren't many moderate Republicans remaining these days. I do have one sister who always considered herself a moderate Republican but she voted for both Kerry and Obama. She now considers herself an Independent.
