1. Fired? Not likely. Nor should he be.
That cartoon is racist only in the absence of any other context. When one considers the events that transpired beforehand (crazed chimp) and who actually drafted the stimulus bill and the old saying that given enough time, a roomful of chimps randomly typing on typewriters etc, then the cartoon makes sense with absolutely no racial overtones.

This strikes me as insane as the call for the deaths of political cartoonists and the destruction of the Danish newspaper who dared to produce an image of Muhammad.

In other words, not every joke or insult involving a monkey is a racial slur.

2. Nobody is calling for anyone's death here.
Well, except for the cartoonist himself.

4. God's Truth And I Take It Seriously
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 09:54 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
I was watching "Countdown" with my best friend , Nate. He's a seventy four year old African American man. I have discussed him before on this board. He's like a surrogate dad to me. He is the most color blind man I have ever met. He has two Bronze Stars; one from Korea and one from Viet Nam. His family is so close to me that my girlfriend and I drove to Fayetteville from Orlando to spend Christmas with him and his family at his second home.

We were watching "Countdown" together; laughing and having a good old time. When the segment on the cartoon came up there was silence. He certainly didn't miss the suggestion the cartoonist was trying to make.

5. I think it's instructive to note also that in eight fucking years I never saw anything
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 09:57 AM by RandomKoolzip
equivalent come from anyone on the left towards Bush. Michelle Malkin, in her book "Unhinged" (yes, i skimmed it) cites some examples of a few left-fringe groups with "KILL BUSH" bumper stickers, but i never saw those anywhere, on anyone's cars, nor did i see a single political cartoonist anywhere ever implicitly or otherwise call for Bush's death like this cartoonist has Obama's. I never saw a single post on DU or anywhere else calling for Bush's assassination. ALREADY, there've been posts on RW boards and blogs "invoking" Lee Harvey Oswald. If I had seen anything equivalent on a left-wing board, I inevitably would have seen the left's self-policing kick in.

Sometimes, there really ISN'T equivalence between the left and right, as much as some would like to see us as two sides of a coin.

6. I Didn't Focus On The Assassination Angle As Much As The Black=Chimpanzee Angle
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 10:03 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
But you have a point.

How could the cartoonist not know that comparing a black man to a chimpanzee is not a wise thing to do.

9. Very selective memory.
You don't recall the "Snipers Wanted" comment that flashed over Bush's picture during the Late Show with Craig Kilborn? There was nothing subtle about that or any secondary interpretation -- unlike this cartoon which really is about the death of a chimp.

7. I really don't believe that this cartoonist was trying to make a racial comment.
And who was the target? Obama? He didn't draft the bill.

Sorry, but this is an outrage that has no traction.

11. Wow
If you don't think President Obama is the public face of the stimulus bill then there is nothing I can do to disabuse you of that notion.

13. You are correct.
The cartoon was clumsy and insensitive but WAS NOT addressing Obama. The target was the bill itself.

3. How Is Comparing A Black Man To A Chimp Not Racist?
And I don't see how you can conflate a call for someone's firing with a call for someone's death.

17. Did You Know The Same Cartoonist?
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 10:26 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Did you know the same cartoonist compared homosexuality to bestiality in one of his cartoons or did a cartoon where Joe Kennedy Senior greeted John Kennedy Jr. in Hell after his plane crashed.

But the cartoonists defenders like BC and OMC and the typical "moderates" just don't see the racism, or anything else that challenges their precious brain-washed obedience to white patriarchy.

19. I Don't See The Nexus Between Ideology And Response
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 10:36 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Most folks know comparing blacks to lower primates is insulting regardless of their ideology unless their ideology is Nazism and even then they know it it is insulting but they don't care.

The least the editor and cartoonist can do is offer a sincere apology.

10. You are creating a problem where none exists.
The cartoon is first about the real live death of a chimpanzee at the hands of a cop. It was then put in the context of the stimulus bill that was NOT written by Barack Obama -- it was written in Congress.
