From the time Jesus was born?
The RWers are running an ad, with that ubiquitous "star of Bethlehem," claiming that if we spent a million a day from the day Jesus was born, it would still be less than the bailout amount.

Someone needs to rebut them, showing the amount we spent on Iraq, and the tax benefits for the Thains of the world and add: where would you rather spend these billions - in Iraq or at home?

2. Just as a guess
George W. probably gave away more per year in tax breaks for the wealthy (in today's dollars) since Jesus was a teenager.

That aside, who is going to pay attention to the "billion-dollar-a-day" bullshit they're peddling other than those who believe any and all fundie "facts" about anything?

They don't need to be rebutted. They need to be scorned, or ignored, or laughed at. Why would any reasonable human being take them seriously. And those who do can never be convinced otherwise.

4. Jesus said "give unto Caesar what is Caesar's"
So if Caesar decided to stimulate the economy in order to help the people as a whole, the Republicans should listen to Jesus and shut the fuck up.

Jesus also said about "blessed are the peacemakers" he never said squat about blessed are the warmongers.

In the only violent act of his life, Jesus threw the money changers out of the Temple, and people like Santelli have been pissed ever since.

5. Religious right pandering
USA GDP is currently estimated at almost $14 trillion. If we spent $10 million every day since Jesus was born, we wouldn't be anywhere near the wealth generated by the United States in a single year.

It's an illegitimate comparison (apples to gravel) that minimizes the problem in a way designed to guilt trip all those bleeding heart evangelicals who supported Obama.

9. Except it doesn't take into account inflation
:hide:

If I paid a dollar every day starting with Jesus's birth, I would have paid off my student loans a long time ago, even tough my loans are greater than $2,000.

10. ....and if we continue to spend that dollar a day for another 6,000 years,
we'll be able to pay for the Iraq War.

15. not really.
even those who dispute the historical existence of jesus often use "the time of christ" as a general marker of time.

17. I wish it were on the front page of every newspaper & that every cable show would display it.
~sigh

What a travesty that our media is so bad that you get more truth from cartoons & shows like TDS & Colbert.
