George P. Bush attacks Charlie Crist .

The other day, I relayed some informed speculation that Charlie Crist could face a serious primary challenge from his party's right wing if he were to run for Senate - despite his lofty poll numbers. That's because Crist is carving out a very public profile these days as a moderate, particularly with regard to stimulus spending.
But apart from a few non-insane fellow travelers like Arnold Schwarzenegger, the GOP has made opposition to the stimulus the sine qua non of modern-day Republicanism. The Florida GOP is no exception, and now its most conservative faction has trotted out George P. Bush (Jeb!'s son) to chide Charlie:


George P. Bush may not be ready to follow his father, grandfather and uncle into politics just yet, but he is trying to help the Republican Party regain a conservative message, which on Saturday included criticism of Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.
Bush, the son of former Gov. Jeb Bush, grandson of former President George H.W. Bush and nephew of former President George W. Bush, addressed a national conference of young Republicans and told them there is a rift in the party between fiscal conservatives and what he calls "D light" -- Republicans trying to appeal to the political middle.

"There's some in our party that want to assume that government is the answer to all of our problems," Bush said. "I'm not going to name any names."

Of course, he did go right ahead and name names:


Afterward, Bush said he doesn't think Crist is a fiscal conservative and that he may have hurt himself with some Republicans for his appearance with Obama and his support of the stimulus plan.

"That will be on his track record, and people are going to remember that," Bush said, adding that Crist is running the risk of falling in the "D light" category of the party.

"There are numerous actions that I have seen legislatively that do not speak to a strong conservative; it speaks more to a moderate," Bush said. "That's fine, but when you run as a conservative and then you lead as a moderate, that's one thing that any leader would have to reconcile."

Could this be a prelude to a fierce moderate-vs-conservative primary fight for the Senate nomination? Or could malcontents like George P. even be hinting at a gubernatorial challenge, if Crist chooses to stay put? This isn't just a fight for the soul of the Florida Republican Party, but really the GOP itself. Crist is their most prominent moderate on the national scene, and from the wingnut point of view, he must be kneecapped.

I'm starting to really believe we could see a major R-on-R food-fight here. Let's at least keep our fingers crossed!

Charlie was not elected because he was perceived as a conservative, he was perceived by the public as a moderate. That said, he's really just kind of spineless. Georgie's dad, Jebbie, painted Florida into a corner with his tax policy. Charlie either has to support the stimulus package, institute insane budget cuts, or revamp our state's tax system. The responsible thing to do would be a revamp of our extremely regressive tax system that puts the load on those least able to afford it and relies on sources that swing wildly with our state's economy. Charlie knows that doing that would be political suicide for anyone with an R next to their name. Insane budget cuts would make the Repubs happy but it would exacerbate the economic collapse here in Florida and make Charlie about as popular as Shrub. The only alternative is to support and accept the stimulus. That way he can maintain high approval numbers without completely alienating all the Repubs. It won't cure revenue problems but Charlie hasn't got the spine to actually do something about those. He has his eye on the senate and then presidency.

Having lived in FL for over 25 years, I am very familiar with Jeb Bush's track record as gov of FL. Jeb Bush has been to FL what Ken Lay was to Enron. After promising the most ethical administration in history, Jeb Bush's administration was full of corruption and nepotism. It was estimated that nearly 40 percent of our state's $48 billion dollar state budget was getting kickbacks in the form of contracts with private companies, many of them employed former Bush staffers. Jeb cut funding for the state's auditor general and office for govt accountability. He sunk a large sum of the state pension funds into a wall street firm's toxic accounts - then became a consultant for that same firm after leaving office.


As to "P" Bush, I hope he has taken some anger management classes since his last trip into the media spotlight:

It's so obvious that if they oppose this bill, they would be doing a huge disfavor to their states. Both Arnold and Crist are Governors of states that routinely get shortchanged when it comes to federal aid -and while supporting the bill could be shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to the primaries, it's in their interest not to kneecap their entire state. The main people(right now the wingnuts) of the GOP apparently don't give a shit about the well being of the states' economies, but rather gaining political ground for their greedy, grubby sacks.

If the GOP had any sense, they might learn something from the fact that one of the most popular Republicans in the country is a moderate.

Crist is VERY popular in FL specifically because he is playing to the middle down here.

The would do better to use Jeb than George P. Bush. People are sick to death of just hearing the name George Bush regardless of what the middle initial might be at this point.

What will be funny will be if Charlie jumps parties and runs as a Democrat if they keep pushing on him too hard.

When that happens I'll laugh my ass off.

There is no way that Charlie will commit political suicide by turning down Federal aid in the recession (depression?) just to make the wing-nut ideologues happy. He'll be happy to take that money and look like the reasonable guy (much like Ahnult in CA) while his own state party organizes a circular firing squad and destroys itself.

Charlie just isn't that dumb.
