9. good luck. Occam Bandage tried valiantly earlier today
but apparently we at DU will have to contend with the reality that there are many in our fold who are just as bad as some of those over at hate sites like freeperland. It's sad, really. We win on the issues. Why not stay classy? Or at the very least level ad hominem attacks against Jindal the politician and his views--not his ethnicity and grade school taunts about his name.

Racism and bigotry is still racism and bigotry when it comes from our own side.

He doesn't look "creepy" he looks Indian.

So he doesn't use the Indian name his parents gave him.

Lots of people do this.

It's as if people are disappointed that he didn't come out talking like a 7-11 cartoon character from the simpsons.......

53. Truth.
Within a minute or two of watching that guy I was making trolley references here. That's the first time I watched him speak and I'll bet his delivery isn't nearly as... patronizing?... when he's talking to actual humans instead of a camera.

But what really pissed me off was when he started using the Mr. Rogers delivery to tell flat-out lies and falsehoods, about "magnetic levitation" trains and volcanoes, but also the glaring falsity of this line:

"Instead of trusting us to make wise decisions with our own money, they passed the largest government spending bill in history, with a price tag of more than $1 trillion with interest.

The problem we have is a direct result of allowing the financial industry to make its own decisions (with their own and others' money) without oversight or regulation--a Republican-created problem. And as far as blowing money goes, how about blowing $5000 on every single Iraqi man, woman and child while killing a million of them and lowering the quality of life for everyone else there?

I fully realize that the Republican Party cannot effectively pursue its agenda of naked evil without telling a few lies here and there and trying to paper over these disastrous past eight years. But for God's sake--your God's sake, Republicans--please send up a liar worthy of your made-up past!

29. I disagree
Yes, a few are trying to stir the pot with calling him his name, but I don't think thats the case with most people. Piyush is no more an offensive name to an American Indian that Salvatore is to an Italian Indian or Barack to a Kenyan American. Making fun of the name by mangling it and twisting it is offensive, but just calling him his birth name...the name that people in his community call him is not offensive. The Indian American I work with also calls him Piyush.

I always called him Bobby until I found out that it wasn't even his legal name, or middle name or anything. It was just a name he picked out. Frankly he should have done what Obama did and decided a made up English name was a bad idea. America is getting used to the exotic sounding names.

38. I think it is different
When the Republicans use Obama's middle name, they do so to point out the fact that it is an Arabic name (as though that were a bad thing). When Democrats call Jindal "Piyush" they do so to draw attention to the fact that he is blatantly concealing his true name in order to fit into a political party that is made up largely of racists and xenophobes. If you look at Jindal's life story it's as though he decided at some point during childhood to change his life completely in a manner that would help him succeed in Republican politics. I don't believe for a second that he decided to call himself "Bobby" because of the character on the Brady Bunch. I will say that calling him "Piyush" is a tad on the immature side. But it is not done to be racist. It is done to point out how much of a fraud he is.

24. Piysuh would only be said to draw attention to his native name
it would not be done for identifying who you're talking about since everyone knows him as Bobby Jindal since grade school.

No, it is not inflammatory to refer to him by his actual legal name, but it isn't productive either.

However, referring to him as PISSAH or PEE USH or other stupid childish name calling WOULD be racist and bigoted and extremely immature and hypocritical after all we and the Obama campaign went through.

87. I'm not saying that I have a problem with him being Catholic or calling himself "Bobby"
Edited on Fri Feb-27-09 12:29 PM by Hippo_Tron
It's just that I am skeptical because his whole story sounds too good to be true. It's as though he magically Americanized himself during his childhood so that he's just American enough that the Xenophobe Party doesn't have a problem with him. I am just skeptical the way that I am skeptical that Bill Clinton "didn't inhale" or I am skeptical that Bush didn't use family connections to get into the National Guard or that he definitely showed up for his flight and didn't go AWOL.

I would probably pretty skeptical about Obama too, except that the man came clean about nearly every possible incriminating thing they could possibly find about his past before they even started looking, which makes it hard find something left to be skeptical about.

I'm not shouting from the rooftops that Bobby Jindal must show me his birth certificate or that he is a secret terrorist. I'm just saying that I think there's a reasonable chance that his backstory is filled with bullshit, as is the case with many politicians.

89. He made these changes long ago though
I guess what I am trying to get you to see is that it is his ethnicity, the color of his skin, the first language of his parents, that are making you question these things. I am NOT calling you a racist. I am saying you are basing your assumptions on stereo types. That is never a good way to approach things.

90. Again, the official story is that he made those changes long ago
And yes it is his ethnicity that does make me ask those questions. If he were WASP named John Smith then he would have no reason to change anything about himself in order to fit into a party that is full of WASPs named John Smith. His ethnicity combined with the fact that he is a Republican in a southern state gives him motive to do this. The fact that his story sounds too good to be true and that politicians have a tendency to lie about their background combined with the motive, gives me a good reason to form a hypothesis that maybe his backstory isn't 100% truthful. I don't plan to ever test or prove this hypothesis because I don't care enough to do that.

But the fact of the matter is that I am partisan and I am bitter about the fact that Republicans insinuate things that are blatantly untrue about our people without a shred of evidence. So humor me a little bit if I want to do some speculation about Jindal on a partisan message board where I admit fully that I could easily be wrong and that I have no evidence other than my own analytical reasoning to back up my ideas.

Sexism- racism-agism---ism, ism ism.

They are all wrong and ignorant to be sure. On the other hand, let us remember that criticizing someone who happens to fall in some category different than us does not an "ism" make.

I was accused on this very forum for sexism for my criticism of Hillary Clinton during the primary. I mentioned nothing nor did I imply anything in regard to sex--yet that was the lament.

Yep, the isms are wrong, but it isn't all ism.

...Jindal is a pissy asshole and that status is beyond and besides his gender, age, ethnicity, real name or religion.

He is a whiny Repuke.

Calling him out on that is no different than calling out some other Pubbie POS. Just because someone has an ethnic background, that does NOT mean that slams about the person are being done for "bad" reasons. He could trace his ancestery to the DAR and that does not make one damn bit of difference. He is what he is...and a complete fool who does not give a shit about those in his state who are needy.

Jindal is a complete asshole...his ethnicity is TOTALLY unconnected to that status. I am sick and tired of the "ISMS" being hurled at one DUer by others.

56. What is that other racist word for a person from India?
Somebody used it a few years ago, it was caught on tape, and they paid a heavy price in the election.
How long before we see that word, or worse, trotted out?

Making a point of calling him by a name that he does not use only makes sense if you want to point at his foreign origin.

the sexist name calling of HRC? Oh, I forgot...sexism is long gone. :sarcasm:

I said that this was no different than the sexist name-calling of Hillary. Please try reading next time.

71. I sort of get it when people say they're just going after Republicans.
I don't get it when people ignore other DUers who say, that's hurtful or offensive.

You'd think having your friends ask you to stop doing something like that would be enough already.

74. Jindal's given name means "nectar," or "milk," or "drink of the gods."
Having said that, I agree that calling him by his given name is offensive to some, because it can be taken (or mistaken) as leaning toward racism. Therefore, I will not use Jindal's given name when referring to him. I will stick with calling him

asshole.

78. So, what name did Jindal use when he was sworn in?
He had to use his real name as did Obama. I don't think calling someone by their name is a put down or name calling or even racist. Obama is not ashamed by his name and neither should Jindal...

I just cant equate someones real name to racism.

80. He was sworn in as "Bobby Jindal".
On the LA ballot, he was listed as Bobby Jindal. He's been known as Bobby personally and professionally for nearly his whole life. Insisting on calling him by a name he doesn't use is childish at a minimum and, in as much as it's reminiscent of freepers' use of "Hussein", it does border on racist.

86. Do we really need a million threads about this?
DU:

Someone posts something and starts a flame war
Someone else posts something about how that thread was wrong
Someone posts a thread about how there are too many threads about the first two things
Repeat 5 million times
