other volcanoes too, starting with Mt. Shasta in California and going all the way up to Mt. Baker close to the Canadian border. Crater Lake in Oregon is the caldera of an extinct volcano.

25. We have a growing bulge west of the Three Sisters here in Central Oregon

Been growing bigger for quite awhile - don't know if one of the Sisters is going to blow or if a new volcano is forming. We've also had a ton of smaller earthquakes deep underground in the Maupin area, frequency increasing.

I lived in Portland when Mt. St. Helens blew - had to have a mask to breath outside in the ash. If you saw that mess, I don't either see how monitoring could be labed "pork"; and like someone else mentioned, we have a big problem with the bulging moving ground in Yellowstone.

Don't know if monitoring will give anyone enough time to leave prior to an eruption, but there is no harm in trying (we do for potential tsunamis, hurricanes and tornadoes) and no reason not to learning about what turns the earth's crust active and growing.

I love Sisters! You have all those neat tall ponderosa pine trees - when we came here looking to buy 10 years ago, Sisters was our first choice. As it turned out, we ended up in the middle of nowhere, next to hundreds of thousands of acres of BLM/NF, in the land of rocky mountain tops and junipers, living a whole different lifestyle and loving it:). I am selfishly hoping the three Sisters wait awhile to blow, because one of my goals is to hike to the top of the South Sister (I hike out here several miles a day).

And how about this mellow winter? Not like last year at all; it has been trying to snow today out here, but in a wierd way, ie between sun breaks. Nice to meet a fellow Central Oregonian - isn't this a great place to hang out? :toast:

I'm a quilter, so Sisters is a required pilgrimage for me. I've been to the quilt show several times so far, and I can't wait to go back.

I lived in Bend for a while, but I moved away before I became a quilt addict.

There's just something magical about seeing all of the quilts outside on a warm summer day. Even with the crowds and the traffic, it's definitely worth it!

Hope you and your dh make it back here - the mountains are still crisp snow covered wonders in the morning, the sunsets are still explosively colorful in the vast sky at dusk, and there is no end to interesting things to do and hobbies to learn, as you know from the quilting experience.

Besides, the desert just plain smells good with all that sage and pine in the air - lots of the best things here in Central Oregon are free:)

in Washington State listed the volcanos in the Cascades as dorment. They also gave us the last eruption dates of all of the Cascade Volcanos. Also said that dorment can go to active in a couple of hours.
