5. Kind of on topic
Im reminded of the old Pepsi commercial:

Thank goodness Jimi Hendrix didn't pick up the accordian instead of the guitar.

Mitten's former guy....heh, wonder if he was thinkin that this makes Mitt look pretty good about now. He still tried to spin it somewhat...Norah was cracking me up. I hadn't seen what others had said, MSNBC showed a montage of "reaction" from Fox, CNN, PBS, etc to Jindal...brutal.

9. But Rush liked it. There's one...
As someone else said, I don't ever recall such a harsh reaction to a response to a speech. I imagine Jindal is laying low for awhile. :D

12. This is a simile in search of historical precedent.
And I've read variations of it more than once today. So, I'm offering one:

By June of 1967, Jimi Hendrix was already a phenomenon in Britain, but he had yet to perform before a large audience in the United States. He was booked for the Monterey Pop Festival, one of the very first "palooza"-type gatherings.

While at the festival, Hendrix took note of another band playing for the first time in America, The Who, and was impressed by their stage-smashing finale. (Knowing each other's acts from back in Britain, neither Hendrix nor Pete Townsend wanted to follow each other; Hendrix lost the coin toss and vowed to "pull out all the stops" when he played. The Grateful Dead were also unceremoniously thrown in between the two acts as padding.)

So when he and The Experience hit the stage, they absolutely tore through the set, a performance so memorable it is still a top-selling live performance. To finish it off, Hendrix set his guitar on fire, and then smashed it:

And then he walked into history. Jimi Hendrix never played another night in his life without closing the show.

Unfortunately, there was one more act that night, and it was their job to walk on stage after one of the most remarked upon performances in modern music history. That act was The Mamas & the Papas. They were probably great in their own way, but that night they were completely upstaged.

Thus, I suggest that a variation of the phrase can be "like The Mamas & the Papas following Jimi Hendrix at Monterey."

13. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony followed by an off key, broken stringed ukelele.
More like it, not to insult regular ukeleles...
