WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal stands by his swipe at federal spending to monitor volcanoes but a mayor in the path of a volcano is fuming, officials say.

In delivering the Republican response to U.S. President Barack Obama's speech this week, Jindal, a rising GOP star, questioned why "something called 'volcano monitoring'" was included in the massive economical stimulus bill.

His question promptly rankled the mayor of one city in the shadow of Mount St. Helens, CNN reported.

"Does the governor have a volcano in his backyard?" Royce Pollard, the mayor of Vancouver, Wash., said to CNN. "We have one that's very active, and it still rumbles and spits and coughs very frequently."

more rural, mountainous areas in WA, AK, and CA, which are predominantly Republican. I wonder what Palin thinks of his remark?

Seattle has signs with Volcano evacuation routes, and a general bit of lore that says you should attempt to get at least fifty feet above valley level on stable ground in the case of a massive pyroclastic flow.

Jindal is an idiot. Why is he a republican? Creeps me out when new-generation Americans cleave to the party of racism and bigotry.

6. Yes, an eruption from Mt. Rainier would devastate the greater Seattle/Tacoma area.

There are lahar warning systems set up in the cities that are nearest the mountain. Even a mudflow could be disastrous for some communities.

The last time I was in Seattle (couple years ago) it was three solid days of dense fog. I got to see the side of the building I was walking next to as long as I stayed within arms length of it, and drank WAY too much coffee.

Alaskans vividly remember that volcanic ash from an eruption of Mount Redoubt nearly brought down a KLM Boeing 747 as it was completing its flight from Amsterdam to Anchorage in December 1989. The volcanic ash caused the failure of all four engines on the jumbo jet."
