N.C. Marine charged with threatening Obama

A Camp Lejeune Marine has been charged with threatening Barack Obama before the president was sworn into office last month.

Obama is scheduled to deliver a speech from the base in Jacksonville today.

Kody Ray Brittingham, 20, faces up to five years in prison and three years of supervised release if convicted of threatening the president-elect, according to U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding.

Brittingham also could be fined up to $250,000.

According to a news release, Brittingham told people in November that he intended to shoot Obama, among other things.

This guy receives free training and becomes (literally) a weapon of mass destruction while getting paid to receive these skills. He then turns around and threatens to use those skills to kill the head of state. And what is the legal response to this? A charge of up to 5 years in prison. It's laughable.

It never included threatening to kill someone.

Bull crap. I've threatened to kill people before. So have you.

It is our right to express our disgust for people by saying that we'd like to kill them or like to see them die.

That right is secured by the first amendment. It is only when we act on that threat that we should be subject to prosecution.

I am willing to bet that there has never been an assasination of a president by someone who has publicly threatened to kill them. Assassins don't threaten to kill presidents. They just do it.

The First Amendment is not an absolute right. There have been limits placed on it. For example, laws against defamation, libel and slander; it is illegal to incite crowds to violence; obscenity can be regulated.

I'm sorry, but expressing the opinion that you like to kill the president should be a protected right.

A conspiracy to kill the president, or a threat followed by some action towards accomplishing that goal is and should be illegal.

But merely stating (in this case probably in reaction to something the president had just said) that you'd like to kill the bastard is a right that all Free Men should enjoy.

The first amendment protects our right to say stupid things. Expressing what is in our hearts, no matter how vile those thoughts might be, should NEVER be a crime. NEVER!

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Four Marines from Camp Lejeune, N.C., arrested Tuesday for allegedly breaking into several vehicles, face multiple charges after local authorities linked them to two armed robberies at Jacksonville hotels.

Police arrested:

• Lance Cpl. Kody Brittingham, 20, of Headquarters and Support Company, 2nd Tank Battalion.

• Lance Cpl. Charles Anderson, 19, of Food Service Company, Combat Logistics Regiment-27, 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

• Lance Cpl. Natalie Byrdsong, 20, Communications Company, CLR-27.

After conferring with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which had been investigating the hotel robberies, Jacksonville police searched a residence and discovered evidence linking the suspects to the incidents at My Motel on Commerce Road and Liberty Inn on Lejeune Boulevard, according to a news release from the police department.

Police told The Daily News of Jacksonville that Brittingham and Anderson entered the exterior doors of My Motel wearing ski masks and carrying a shotgun and a pistol. They allegedly shot the interior door several times. Anderson also is accused of taking nearly $1,500 at gunpoint from the Liberty Inn, according to the newspaper.

The case remains under investigation and more arrests are expected, according to the release. All four Marines, and one civilian, remain in Onslow County Jail.

Groover was charged with breaking and entering and conspiracy. His bond was set at $10,000.

Brittingham was charged attempted armed robbery, breaking and entering, and conspiracy. His bond was set at $40,000.

Anderson was charged with armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, discharging a firearm into occupied property, breaking and entering, and two counts of conspiracy. His bond was set at $60,000.

Byrdsong was charged with breaking and entering and conspiracy. Her bond was set at $10,000.

Stanley A. Clyburn Jr., 31, a civilian, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of conspiracy. His bond was set at
