Jim Bunning Threatens To Resign From Senate To Hurt GOP »
Bunning has responded aggressively, threatening to sue the Senate Republicans' campaign arm if it doesn't fully back his reelection.

And now the latest: Bunning "reportedly said privately that if he is hindered in raising money for his re-election campaign he is ready with a response that would be politically devastating for Senate Republicans: his resignation."

17. No we wouldn't - Franken will be number 59

5. Resign then Jimmy...
Do it soon, Bunning!!!

IMO, the GOP is fracturing, and I am hoping to see even more devastation in 2010.

23. The GOP wanted him not to run for re-election. I doubt they want him to resign.
If a Republican Senator is an embarrassment to the party, they want him to resign if his state has a Republican governor (e.g., Larry Craig, who resisted the pressure), but not if his state has a Democratic governor (e.g. David Vitter, who received no such pressure).

The Republicans don't relish the thought of a Bunning candidacy next year. They want him to emulate Martinez, Bond, Voinovich, etc. and announce that he won't run. But I really doubt that anyone in the GOP was trying to get him to resign. That would give us an immediate seat and give a Democrat the advantage of incumbency in 2010.
