Obama’s Speech: 52 Million-Plus TV Viewers
Obama’s Speech: 52 Million-Plus TV Viewers
By Brian Stelter

More than 52 million people watched President Obama’s first address to a joint session of Congress in prime time on Tuesday, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The TV audience, pegged at 52.4 million by Nielsen, does not include out-of-home or online viewers. Nielsen said the address, which was broadcast roughly between 9 and 10:30 p.m., averaged a 49 share across 10 networks, which means that almost half of the people watching TV at the time were watching Mr. Obama’s speech.

The sizable audience for Tuesday’s address is the latest in a series of Nielsen indications that the nation is paying close attention to the new president. Mr. Obama’s first prime-time news conference on Feb. 9 drew an average of 49.5 million viewers on eight networks.

1. Nielson also does not measure PBS/C-SPAN/online/out-of-home, so the audience was at least 60.
I was watching on C-SPAN with ten guests, so there ya go.

14. I could never stand to watch him. I relied on hearing about his speeches via
the internet. I always wanted to throw a shoe at the television whenever I saw him... or Cheney, Rice or Rumsfeld, for that matter. I always watched Alberto Gonzales, however. Kind of like rubber-neckin' at a car wreck.

6. But Laura Bush "forgot" to watch it. I can't wrap my brain around that.
It means that *shrub* probably did not watch it either, after all, he passes out at 9 pm.
It is amazing to think she did not just lie in order to not seem so ignorant and non-caring. But WAIT maybe she did lie, in order to not have to say something positive, or, God forbid, intelligent about the speech.

7. I really think she did watch it but couldn't admit
if questioned that everything Prez Obama is proposing is a direct result of all the FUBARs her spouse is responsible for.

Otherwise, you're right. Admitting she didn't watch it makes her look ignorant and shallow.

10. Oh, now don't blame Laura...
if she would have gotten her Dallas Morning News delivered to her house that morning instead of it sitting up at their security team's perimeter all day she would have known about it....:sarcasm: It's all the paper deliverer's fault, not her's and chimp's!

8. It was a fantastic speech full of thoughtful and well reasoned ideas and plans.
I have no idea if all of that will come to pass, but I DO know that you can't get there without at least trying.

But the speech itself, how he presented his administration's ideas and plans, was superb.

9. And addresses like this is how Obama reaches the people
without the filter of the MSM. Even Faux is forced to cover his speeches, and they can only spin so much--Obama is a great teacher and his speeches are clear. Folks are understanding what he's saying and they will soon be seeing he comes through with his promises.
