Kucinich: "It's our obligation that people in this country have work"
"It's our obligation that people in this country have work," he said. "Global corporations are throwing people out of work. We have the responsibility to protect jobs. Call it protectionism or whatever. It's either buy American or bye, bye, America."

"We have the responsibility to protect jobs"

Goddess bless us! Could anything be more clear and straightforward? NOT the obligation to help the wealthy international elites maximise their offshore profits, but the obligation to protect JOBS for US working people! Because if we don't protect US jobs, then there isn't going to be US money to buy American, which means 'Bye, America'.

Why isn't anyone else cutting to the chase like that?

2. he doesn't need his staff to "clarify"
Or accuse anyone of "taking his comments out of context". (A favorite defense of Newt's and Lott's, btw).

DK is the real straight shooter in this race. No equivocating, no waffling, no rationalizations. As real as the day is long.

I am getting excited about the Meetup tonight! Can you tell? :bounce:

ZombySon (drinking coffee out of his DK mug) :hi:

3. Clark Has Also Said This, and Cited a 1940's Era Law
That effectively requires the government to provide jobs.

But good on Dennis! I am more and more convinced that Clark and Kucinich are two of the very best people running.

5. hadn't heard about that!
For the "general welfare and the common defense"... two basic American values lost in Bush's America.

You would think a nation of productive and employed people would be the best face we could put forward if we truly care about being an example for the world. "Just getting by" is not acceptable, and sets the bar lower for Americans - it says we should have low expectations and be happy with them, or accept an undercurrent of fear as the norm in our daily lives.

Underemployment? Fear? If people think this is the best we can do, we have work to do.

A nation not at peace with itself cannot be at peace with the world. (Yes, that is an original quote, as far as I know, lol)

Thanks for your positive words about Dennis, and let's get these primaries started already!

16. That quote deserves its own thread.
A nation not at peace with itself cannot be at peace with the world.

It cuts to the heart of the matter, and points us in the direction we should be looking. Dennis Kucinich is firmly pointed that way, and ready to take us down the road of reflection, healing, and self-awareness as a nation.

If I want to learn and grow, I have to put time, thought, and energy into the process.

If I want my nation to learn and grow, I put time, thought, energy, my voice, and my vote into the process.

7. Agreed
Although I don't agree with Clark as much as I do with DK, I truly believe he's much more honest than a number of the other candidates who are running right now (fill in the blanks if you wish).

11. The founders addressed the issue by insisting on slavery, i.e., free labor
And that's still the dream of the radical right.

Sweat shops in India and China.
The founding fathers would be proud.

12. I like his policies
I went to his web site and did a lot of reading. I have seen several speeches and an interview. Kucinich is the real deal. I am saddened that he won't get the nomination. I have been trying to figure out why
he isn't getting more exposure and why his msg. isn't getting out. In my view he is the only person that truely cares for the American people. I am not a Dem. but I would vote for him for Pres.

Think I will like this place. I post on a few other boards where there are some real dufus neocons. Sometimes it's fun to rub their noses into their own doo doo but I miss actual debates on issues. These people don't debate. They are not logical and when they are lookin' real stoopid they start name callin' and redicule. I do give as good or bad as I get. btw not a Dem, a Green. ;)

22. Off On A Tangent... I've Been Self Employed Often In My Life
More often than not living hand to mouth... up til moving back to help run my family's business.

I've twisted bittersweet vines into wreath bases and wired fresh evergreens onto them to sell on the side of the road around Christmas... made LOTS of money.

Started my own landscape/garden maintance business with a pair of pruning sheers, a rake, a spade and a plastic tarp.

I've made cloth doll sculptures from discarded fabrics to sell.

I've babysat for my friends kids since I'm still single and don't have kids of my own.

50 years ago my grandparents sold everything they owned to buy the Inn my family STILL owns and operates hands on.

I happen to be a Dennis fan and started as a supporter of his in the Primary, by the way.

Here is a quote where Dennis says "It's our obligation that people in this country have work".

I have to question this sentiment.

Also, Global Corporations are not necessarily a bad thing. While some jobs SHOULD be protected I disagree that we should try and stop ALL of them from going overseas.

Things need to be more in balance and better care should be made to protect emerging democracies and marketplaces abroad. And there's a need to redistribute wealth... it's good to note that blood and money tend to flow to where the activity is happening.

As for jobs at home and our fellow citizens... it's up to Americans to get educated and motivated.

Let's not tacitly accept Victim Status.

24. CS, I congratulate you!
You're obviously a person of energy, intelligence, and good family upbringing.

I'd point out, though, that not everyone has your advantages. The entrepreneur and activist Paul Hawken, in his Growing a Business points out that there's a quality called 'permission of the marketplace'. This 'permission' is elusive and hard to define--maybe it's pheromones or similar--but it's the difference between success and failure. Some people are somehow granted it and prosper, other people--apparently equally intelligent, skillful, friendly, and hardworking--aren't and they go under. You and your family sound as though you have it.

25. I agree with you Mairead....not everyone has that "magic mojo"
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 04:52 PM by Desertrose
when it comes to creating jobs for themselves....there is a lot more to take into consideration than just "working hard & you can make it"...opportunities are not always equal or fair....

and having other obligations (children, elderly parents etc) adds another degree of challenge onto it.

I do agree that somehow our govt should provide employment or at least the opportunity for employment....if not then it will end up caring for them in other ways.

I like that Dennis always finds the win/win solutions for challenges.

Peace
DR
