comparison to supporting Saddam. Just watching CNN with Candy and the Ad attacking Specter is flat screened and all I could hear was Saddam and think there was a picture of him also in the ad. Crowley then says that Specter is out campaigning but doesn't show a picture of him or a photo or video coverage of him on the campaign trail. So, his opponent's ad is what the viewer remembers.
Now, many of you might not remember this but back after Reagan the Annenburg School of Communications got after the Networks for showing Campaign ads in their news stories with the ad facing the viewer. The suggestion was that viewers often thought these were campaign ads and the Networks were "endorsing" the candidate (yes, they found that in their studies).
The Networks agreed with Annenburg's Study and said that they would do a "Rotation" of any Campaign ad they displayed by turning the ad so that it looked like a TV screen turned sideways. This would lessen voter confusion. So from the late 80's on all ads have been run that way on Network and Cables, but all of a sudden this has changed. I don't watch CNN much but this seemed very New to me that they've gone back to the confuse the viewer Campaign Tricks.
Be on the lookout for this and e-mail CNN or whichever station you see running it because it's a change in policy. I hope there are other DU'ers who remember this to back me up here.
