1. We have plenty of qualified candidates and the votes to confirm.
Let the Pukes howl.

3. We do NOT have the votes to confirm even with Franken seated
I'm so tired of this "Filibuster Proof Senate" because it assumes that all the democrats will support us.

We are foolish to believe that.

5. H, LynneSin. I can't give you the crystal ball outcome but
I think the votes are there for a candidate from this list of women.

I would expect "principled" opposition from the Republicans but I think there's no case to be made that these potential nominees are not qualified for the job.

Agree with you that '60' will remain elusive. But for Senators to oppose a Court appointment, there has to be a better reason than ideological objection.

2. I love Granholm but he should go with Sotomeyor first
Granholm is a darling of the Emily's List Crowd and could be a campaign target to use against democrats and rally the numnuts in 2010 (You want more women like Granholm appointed - then you better vote republican).

I think Sotomeyor is a great choice not just because she's a woman but also she is hispanic AND she's very qualified for the bench.

13. I hear the name Sonia Sotomayor used often
Widely considered a political centrist by the American Bar Association Journal and others, Sotomayor was nominated on November 27, 1991, by President George H. W. Bush to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated by John M. Walker, Jr. (the president's cousin). She became the youngest judge in the Southern District and the first Hispanic federal judge anywhere in New York State.

According to a blog post by conservative activist Ed Whelan, Sotomayor's nomination was part of a deal President Bush made with Republican Senator Al D'Amato and Democratic Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York, and it was Moynihan who suggested Sotomayor's name to President Bush. According to the Congressional Research Service, it is the longstanding practice in most states, including New York, for home-state Senators of both parties to play roles in recommending individuals for Federal District Court judgeships. However, the final decision about whom to nominate always rests with the President, not a Senator.

15. She would sail through a lot more easily than others might--some of the non-crazypants
Republicans might be convinced to vote for her.

That could grease the skids for a more liberal nominee when Ginsburg/Stevens/Scalia (OH GOD PLEASE PLEASE LET THIS MAN DIE OF A THOUSAND BLEEDING ULCERS) goes.

14. We could benefit immensely politically by choosing an Hispanic
Politically speaking.

Ethically it's unfair to preference anyone based on any attribute other than qualifications for the job.
