Obama's pick should be able to go left of Souter, just like Ailito was to the (way) right of O'Connor...

We shouldn't have to apologize for wanting a liberal on the court...Last I checked, Obama won a landslide election & part of that had to do with many in the country not wanting the Supreme Court full of 9 Antonin Scalia's...

8. Indeed the battle in US politics is between the Centre Right and the Far Right.

The issue has always been how the Republicans have been able to frame the centre right as "radical liberals". I said on my post on health, the GOP may try and portray the Democratic Party as "socialist" but it is far removed from being so. In comparison to political parties across the World, "Liberal" Democratic Senators are still seen as centre right, which places Conservative Democrats on the right and the GOP on the hard right.

That is why I strongly oppose the term "moderate democrat". The moderates are in fact those deemed "liberal".

He's a good and fair Justice, but his conservative side sometimes showed on police matters and business matters.

and the media urged Bush right along to pick a strong conservative, while they are telling Obama that there is already a strong liberal on the bench (seriously, I heard that), so we need a more moderate, and he best not piss off Hispanics and Women. It's annoying. I'd like the best of both worlds.
