Ginsburg: Court needs another woman

Eleven days after surgery for cancer, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg attended President Obama's speech to Congress on Feb. 24, in part because "I wanted people to see that the Supreme Court isn't all male."

WASHINGTON — Three years after Justice Sandra Day O'Connor left the Supreme Court, the impact of having only one woman on the nation's highest bench has become particularly clear to that woman — Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Her status as the court's lone woman was especially poignant during a recent case involving a 13-year-old girl who had been strip-searched by Arizona school officials looking for drugs. During oral arguments, some other justices minimized the girl's lasting humiliation, but Ginsburg stood out in her concern for the teenager.

"They have never been a 13-year-old girl," she told USA TODAY later when asked about her colleagues' comments during the arguments. "It's a very sensitive age for a girl. I didn't think that my colleagues, some of them, quite understood."

As Justice David Souter prepares to retire at the end of the term this summer, the significance of Ginsburg's position as the nine-member court's only woman has become a point of broad discussion. President Obama is under pressure from groups such as the National Women's Law Center to nominate another woman.

Only three justices were born in odd numbered years, and one of those three is retiring. The other six were born in even numbered years. Therefore the next justice must be born in an odd numbered year. Also, the ratio is seven justices born in the East to only two born in the West, so the next justice must be a person who was born on the West Coast in an odd numbered year.

that we seem to be back in the '70's all over again (deja vu). The Backlash against Women began with Raygun and is still going fairly strong. Clinton didn't help....he attacked 'welfare moms' as being lazy. Where are the dads of these children? And along came W who outwardly hates women unless they stay in their place and do as he says.

And just watching a day of TV, which is controlled by the likes of Rupert Murdoch who is one ugly misogynist, makes it very clear women are being slapped by The Backlash. And the fact that women go along with this sexist attitude (breast implants, 4" high heels, being Eye Candy for boyz while boyz cover up their bodies and women show more and more) is extremely disappointing. Maybe it's because the young women have not had to fight for legislation. I don't know....but the Corporate Brainwashing sure has been effective.

Just think....no condom commercials during prime time TV, but lots of viagra during the dinner hour. women should be the ones given viagra....they can then choose who gets it. But that would be heresy, right?

are unlikely to be found in a single pick and person. I for one am fine with some of those things now, some later.

Nothing wrong with people lobbying for their "favorite" conjunct, I suppose, although it does seem a bit self-serving and dismissive of those who have approximately equal grievance with the traditional composition of the SCOTUS.

I know that FDR tried to increase the size of the court but it but I think that Obama has the popularity to push it through, If the court was expanded to 11 justices then he could appoint 2 and this 5-4 crap would be over.
