10. That's wrong, Specter was in danger before the gaffes

As a PAer I can tell you Specter was NOT safe and did not have the election sewn up before his mistakes, for several reasons.

-He had at least one primary challenger already who had refused to step down

-As soon as he switched the GOP began to look for an alternative to Toomey, in both Gerlach and Ridge, two guys who would be a tough candidate for most democrats to beat (though Specter could probably easily defeat Gerlach, as in my opinion the real reason Gerlach survived in 2006/2008 is us running weak candidates against him, I mean his biggest win ever was 52% against a little known badly underfunded challenger).

-Despite how many online seemed convinced that a moderate prochoice person like Ridge couldn't win the GOP nomination here I must strongly disagree as a PAer, Ridge has not had to take a stance on stuff like the stimulus bill (that caused Specter's GOP numbers to collapse) which means that Toomey's #1 weapon against Specter won't work on Ridge. On top of all that a poll out today showed Ridge ahead of Toomey by more then a 2 to 1 margin in the primary.

If Specter runs in the GE against Toomey, he will crush him. He had that sewn up without any doubt. Now that he has refused to play ball with the Dems, an alternative candidate such as Ridge will make it very hard for him to win the GE - Specter needs the Democratic votes to beat any Republican other than Toomey.
