No Generation Gap: Democrats Have Edge in Every Age Group
May 8, 2009 12:17 PM

Democrats lead Republicans among every age group of the American electorate, according to the polling firm Gallup.

A Gallup analysis of its polls between Jan. 2 and May 5 shows younger voters, between the ages of 18 and 29, tend to identify with the Democrats or to be independent. As the age increases, voters gravitate toward one political party or the other.

Also, Republicans show gains among voters approaching middle age in their 30s and 40s, and again as they reach retirement age. Even among those age groups, though, Democrats still hold the advantage.

"At no single age does the percent Republican exceed the percent Democrat," Gallup says.

The findings were based on interviews with 123,890 adults nationwide this year.

Wow. Thank you, President Obama, for making the Democratic Party cool again! :fistbump:

GOP base rips National Council for a New America

Mike Huckabee, the former presidential candidate who was not invited to join the so-called GOP panel of experts involved with the effort — a list that included Govs. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Sarah Palin of Alaska and Haley Barbour of Mississippi and former Govs. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Jeb Bush of Florida — said that it was “sad day” in Republican politics when “we think it is necessary to form a ‘listening group’ to find out what Americans think we should be fighting for.”

“Our problem is not lack of ‘experts,’ but too many of them and not enough attention to the hard working people in our communities that aren’t connected to the Beltway, but to the heartland,” he said in a statement.

The former Republican presidential candidate also knocked Bush, who suggested at the group’s first town hall event on Saturday that it was time to get past “nostalgia” for the Reagan era.

“Frankly, the party was in pretty good shape then and can be again, but Ronald Reagan didn't summarily dismiss values voters like this new group of ‘experts’ has by not listing any of the issues that still matter to many of those common Americans this group wants to listen to,” Huckabee said.

What's Reagan's 11th Commandment again? ;)

10. While this
is great news I'm still left to wonder how Republicans are making gains in some of these age groups? Especially the 30 to 40 year olds.

and pick and choose who to vote for based on the election or don't vote at all. Maybe people in this age group cling to Rethug ideas because its a more stressful time of life (young kids, first houses, lots of pressure to keep a job because the kids need things).

16. I wonder if there is some kind of rebellion against their hippy parents going on?
Some years ago, when my generation's (Baby Boomers) kids were college age or young adult, I noticed many of the kids where I work embracing (*urk*) Conservatism. It really broke my heart to see that kind of narrow mindedness in people who should be exploring high ideals of betterment for the planet and the diversity of life--Progressive ideals, in other words.

Seeing young men retreating into closed little circles of bible study and dominance over their wimmenfolk, and young women renouncing the world behind a domestic fortification of endless breeding and homeschooling just blows my mind.

17. I believe so. My parents were already conservative so I rebelled the other way.

18. People in their 30s and 40s are starting to make real money for the first time, so TAX CUTS
start to sound pretty good to them. I think that's why we need universal health care and not just universal access; Dems need to be able to say to those people, "Look, vote for us and you actually get something valuable in return."

I also think people that age are having teenagers, so all of a sudden they have to get all moral. A parent may have smoked a shit-ton of weed back in the day, but now they'll tell their kids, "The stuff today is way more potent. It's not the same as what I was doing. Drugs are bad." They become more hypocritical, excusing their own actions and blaming others: the conservative platform.

15. And the rolling wake up of various segments of America continues!
The Republicans are putting themselves out of business, and it's an accelerating process. As they get smaller and more shrill, they actually turn off more people, which allows them to get smaller and more shrill.
