also were offended by David Feherty's joke about Reid and Pelosi.

For the record, I wasn't offended by either of these efforts to be outrageous in the name of humor. Neither one was a great joke, although I personally enjoyed Wanda's more. In any event, they were jokes -- and in both cases jokes about powerful adults who can take care of themselves. Sometimes jokes misfire or -- heavens forbid -- are viewed by some as being in bad taste.

Can we move on now?

1. The difference between Feherty and Wanda's jokes is the venue
A roast is a roast right? David Feherty's was acting as a representative of his company, he made an error in judgment of when to tell the joke.

Wanda Sykes has no reason to apologize, none at all after all it is her American right to express her freedom of speech!

Folks remember these are the same Repugs that tried to destroy the Dixie Chicks for....gasp freedom of speech.

If the Repugs cannot take it...they shouldn't dish it out!

2. why do you say feherty was acting as a representative of his company?
Edited on Mon May-11-09 04:56 PM by onenote
he was an (alleged) humorist writing in a magazine -- not even a magazine about golf.

And I certainly agree Wanda has no reason to apologize. I would never demand one. Nor for that matter would I demand one of Feherty for his outrageous comments, which included his unfunny (imo) joke about pelosi and reid as well as a somewhat funny(again imo) suggestion that right to lifers and those opposed to gay marriage should be executed. He publicly characterizes himself as an idiot, so why would anyone demand he apologize?

3. It was a humor piece for a magazine.
I think people today are just too quick to overreact and frankly, need to sit down and just shut the fuck up.

Feherty's joke wasn't funny, but I didn't find it offensive.

I didn't find Sykes' joke offensive, but I did find it funny.

4. Sorry, consistency and nice aren't available from those types.
But my question is why Feherty is not in jail. His joke goes beyond free speech and directly advocates violence against American political leaders.

5. Feherty is not in jail because we have free speech in this country.
Including the freedom to say stupid, even offensive things. Feherty, as he often is, was stupid and offensive. Hell, I'm surprised the fundies aren't up in arms about his advocating that they be executed for opposing gay marriage.

But he didn't directly advocate violence against anyone -- he made a bad joke about what he thought might happen to pelosi and reid if they were on an elevator with osama bin laden and some us military personnel.

Thankfully, most people can distinguish between humor -- even really really bad, failed attempts at humor -- and "threats" deserving of state action.
