WANDA SYKES' OFFENSIVE ROUTINE.

Wanda Sykes' comedy routine at the White House Correspondent's Dinner was really offensive. In it, Sykes suggested that conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh is supported by Hamas, and that Islamists are "constantly issuing Limbaugh talking points." She joked about terrorists supporting conservatives in general, suggesting that recent violent events in Iraq are attempts by terrorists to swing the upcoming midterm elections in favor of Republicans.

Then she got really personal. She joked that Limbaugh was a racist who doesn't want black people to "escap(e) the underclass." She accused him of being responsible for killing "a million babies a year," and aired her friend's theory that Limbaugh himself was a terrorist attack," a followup to 9/11. She also, most disgustingly, said that if conservatives kept apologizing to Limbaugh, they'd eventually contract "anal poisoning." She wondered when Republicans would finally stop "bending over and grabbing their ankles" for Limbaugh, and finally concluded that Limbaugh was just a "bad guy."

Oh wait. Wanda Sykes didn't say any of these things. These are things Rush Limbaugh has said about Obama or other Democrats in the past year, the kind of statements few reporters found offensive enough to write about, despite the fact that most of them were said with the utmost seriousness. And while Sykes is a mere comedian whose influence on the Democratic Party is negligible, Limbaugh's influence in the party is so great that Republican leaders can't even criticize him without having to issue apologies after the fact.

You can't undo what you hear. The memes he's spreading get into your brain and others, as you talk about him. It's happening in this thread.

Secondly, what you listen to affects you physically. Witness your own statement "I can only stomach a few minutes a day." Allowing that drivel into your mind turns your stomach and that, stays with you for long after you change the channel. If you don't listen to it, your stomach doesn't turn. (Give it a try, I didn't believe this idea either, until I tested it.)

The mood you go into when listening to Rush affects others. If Rush makes you belligerent, or raises your blood pressure, that has an effect on people around you through your altered mindset and behavior. It's poison. Second hand, or first hand. If others can hear what you're listening to, it affects them directly.

Rush's power comes from his audience. Even you. The GOP's power comes from Rush's audience. If nobody listened to Rush, he would be powerless, and the GOP would lose power. They would try to regain it by replacing Rush, and he would go away.

So yes, it's fair to consider the source of your information and entertainment, and to encourage others to do the same.

I don't know if this was his drunken idea of a joke or what. My recollection is that the humor at these events have always been a bit edgy (Rearranging deck chairs on the Hindenberg, for instance) so I'm not going to jump on Hitchens without knowing the context. But hey, I don't think Sykes was out of line either. As for speculating on Hitchens' state of intoxication, well, he was awake so yeah, he was drunk.
