Michelle Obama has a place in her heart for museums.
Cutting the ribbon today to mark the official re-opening of the Charles Engelhard Court, the grand centerpiece of the newly renovated American Wing at The Metropolitan Museum of Art., the first lady was escorted by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
"Over its historic first 100 days, this administration has already given us a very strong indication of the high place it holds for arts and culture in this country, and needless to say we are enormously heartened,'' museum president Emily Rafferty said. "But, after all, the president and the first lady did meet in a museum.''
(They actually met at the Chicago law firm where they were working -- she was his assigned mentor -- and he took her to a museum.)
"Thank you for reminding me," Michelle Obama said today to the Met's president. "Now, after 20 some odd years of knowing a guy, you forget that your first date was at a museum. But it was, and it was obviously wonderful. It worked."
