Washington -- Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm apparently did not meet privately with President Barack Obama at the White House today when the widely believed contender for the Supreme Court attended a Rose Garden event on tailpipe emissions and mileage standards.
But the president was warm toward her, calling her the best looking of three governors in front row seats, and at one point giving her a peck on the left cheek...
Genna Gent, Granholm's top Washington aide who was with her, said, "
To the best of my knowledge, the governor and the president didn't privately meet." ...
Granholm's name was again a hot topic in the White House briefing today, when White House spokesman Robert Gibbs danced around questions about whether Obama talked with Granholm. Unlike Granholm's aide, Gibbs wouldn't be pinned down on whether Obama met with Granholm privately.
"So, it's possible? And it's not possible?" one reporter asked.
"Who's to say," Gibbs responded.
The intrigue was ratcheted up when Gibbs sidestepped a question whether any interviews have taken place. He said none had as of Monday afternoon.
"I've become much more coy," Gibbs said. "
