Do what Commanders in Chief order, not what they do when they have the opportunity.
At Arlington National Cemetery, Obama said,
"Why in an age when so many have acted only in pursuit of narrowest self-interest have the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines of this generation volunteered all that they have on behalf of others," he said. "Why have they been willing to bear the heaviest burden?"

"Whatever it is, they felt some tug. They answered a call. They said 'I'll go.' That is why they are the best of America," Obama said. "That is what separates them from those who have not served in uniform, their extraordinary willingness to risk their lives for people they never met."

Hopefully those who support President Obama and former Presidents Clinton and Bush will volunteer to fight our nation’s wars and be recognized as “the best of America” something that those three presidents avoided when they had the opportunity and as Obama said “acted only in pursuit of narrowest self-interest”.

1. a bit of a leap in logic-
Obama said in an era when "so many have acted only in pursuit of the narrowest self-interest" he didn't say anyone who hasn't volunteered for the Military is pursuing narrow self-interest..?!. If you listen to other speeches he's made, like the one to U. Arizona, he places a high value on 'service'. That isn't limited to military- I think you are overreacting.

There are many ways to serve - The military is one. Yesterday was a day to honor those who served in the Military. What would you expect to have been said?

4. Bush and Clinton actively avoided a war that their generation was called to fight
Edited on Tue May-26-09 08:53 AM by karynnj
Obama came of age when there was no large scale war. His first job out of Columbia and his first job out of Harvard Law were working to improve live in the poorest section of Chicago. This certainly seems to be working in the interest of others - rather than self interest. Coming out of Harvard Law as an editor of the Law Review, he could have made millions working for any number of large corporations or as a trial lawyer - he didn't - he served the community.

You can argue, that in spite of not serving in a war that by 1969 Clinton did not believe in, he did work for others - as AG and Governor of Arkansas, when he, like Obama, could instead have made millions.
