CNN's Jeffrey Toobin: the new face of America

We have had 110 Supreme Court justices, all but four where white men.

We have had 44 Presidents, all but one were white men.

So looking at Sotomayor and Obama side by side this morning: this is the new face of America.

8. A Martin Luther King Jr. quote I heard last night brings this point home.

First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.


How does this quote not apply just as equally now to moderate minority politicians and judges like Obama and Sotomayor? Tell me what perceivable difference a more diverse government has made on our lives? It's been great for the few individuals who have acheived overwhelming success within the system, but it has done little to improve circumstances for rest of us.

6. Rush can say that the sun sets in the East

and his dittoheads will still applaud him and he will still collect his millions.

Rush and Hannity and Newt should be grateful that we have a Democrat in the White House and a Democratic controlled (at least on paper) Congress. Otherwise they would have nothing to say and no one who would pay them a dime to spout their nonsense.
