In God We Trust appeared on coins starting in 1864.

McCarthy was born in 1908.

As for the establishment of the "In God We trust" as the official national motto, this took place in 1956. By that time, McCarthy had lost all favor in the senate and would have been lucky to be able to get a resolution passed proclaiming water to be wet.

While it was on coins earlier, the political climate in the 1950's during the McCarthy Witchhunt Era led to Congress passing legislation putting the odd slogan on paper money.

Besides, the Republicans who want this shit think Joe McCarthy was The Man.

3. Well, the motto goes back long before McCarthy

Back to the time of the Civil War, in fact, when a Northern preacher thought that putting In God We Trust (or something similar) on coins would help the Union win the war (he could have gotten the idea from a line from Francis Scott Key's famous poem about the bombardment of Ft. McHenry-- "and this be our motto, In God Is Our Trust"). Anyway, although the motto first appeared on the lowly 2-cent piece in 1864 (and ironically, the word "WE" was quickly worn away), after the Union did win, its use became mandatory on all coins the size of quarters and larger starting in 1866.

In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt tried to have the motto removed from new $10 and $20 gold coins that were introduced that year, but in 1908 the public outcry had become so great that Congress passed an act to restore the motto to these coins, leaving the dime and penny as the only coins being produced without the motto. But when the Lincoln cent was introduced in 1909, it came with the motto.

Interestingly enough, when the Buffalo/Indian Head nickel was introduced in 1913, it did not carry In God We Trust, and no one seems to have raised a fuss about that.
