Chamber of Commerce criticizes 'public option' on insurance

Chamber of Commerce criticizes 'public option' on insurance

The August ad wars over health care are heating up.

Here is one from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, criticizing the "public option" health insurance plan backed by President Obama and Democratic allies.

<video>

THE SCRIPT: "Washington's latest health reform idea? A trillion dollar health plan ... and a government run "public option" ... With big tax increases ... Even on health benefits ... And the federal deficit? The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office says the deficit will grow $239 billion ... Inflated taxes ... Swelling deficits ... And expanded government control over your health ... Tell Congress 'let's slow down.' And reform health care the right way."

THE IMAGES: Picture of a red balloon being blown up. As a narrator reads the script, words such "tax increases," "inflated deficits," and "government control" are superimposed on the balloon as it expands; it pops at the end.

REALITY CHECK: Obama says various proposals could cost up between $800 billion and $1 trillion, but the cost is spread out over ten years. The president and Democratic allies said they do not seek government control over health care, and that people will be able to keep their current plan and current doctor. The Congressional Budget Office projected a $239 billion budget deficit over 10 years, but that only applies to a plan put forth by House Democrats. The Senate is working on its own version of health care reform, and Obama has said, "I won't sign a bill that adds to the deficit or the national debt."

WHERE IT'S PLAYING: In 21 states.

2. I don't think you can dissolve it due to the 1st amendment
And I mean it's not like they hide the fact that they're a front for rich people.

3. Yes, but isn't it interesting
that they're spending a lot money to fight an option that some people claim is dead?

5. Who cares what "the chamber" thinks? They created this mess.
Honestly, we need a general strike. That will get even the Chamber of Commerce on board. That's how they get things done in France. They still have them occasionally in Canada. We have to "make" our leaders do the right thing. Obama wasn't kidding when he said "we are" the change. We have to make him give us single payer.

9. If the chamber of douchebags is opposed then it must be good for middle class working people.
In reality healthcare reform is good for all involved.

10. Nothing is dead. The fear machine is fucking CHURNING
which should tell all of us that the fight is in full effect.

I think some would just rather lament and handwring than get down and dirty.
