The Fairweather Independents Have Been Swayed
I don't think there's any doubt as to what has caused Obama's decline in the polls. Independents who helped put him in office have now, not even a year into his Presidency, jumped ship quicker than a bowl of running noodles. Many of them were Republican anyway, so it's no surprise that they've probably been swayed by their other Republican bretheren and associates. Indies helped Obama win North Carolina (my state, not required for 350, but still fun to have) and Florida amoung others.

1. Fortunately, the next election is over three years away.
And the GOP rising star has already fallen tragically to Earth.

2. Um ... iirc, that's not what the polls are saying.
Obama is holding steady with Democrats and Independents. Among Republicans, however, his numbers have dropped dramatically in recent weeks. That change accounts for almost all the change in his polling numbers.

Again, iirc.

7. That is what Gallup is seeing as well
the number for liberal and centrist democrats have been steady or gone slightly up. Independents have gone slightly down, but republicans have taken a nose dive.

3. These are the "undecided" voters
who are in danger of drowning every time they're outside in a rainstorm.

4. No true. The media is hyping a small bunch of nuts who are probably too lazy to vote.
Don't buy into the rw spin. Obama's ratings are just as high as ever.

5. I remember when Clinton got elected in 1992.
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 06:29 PM by stopbush
I worked at a big corporation where all of the higher ups were Rs. After a few months in office, the independents who had voted for Clinton started bitching about what a big mistake they had made. "I've never lost faith in a president so quickly" I recall one of them carping. Their carping was - naturally - being fueled by the Rs who had decided Clinton was a failure on Jan 19.

Then, voila! A year or so later, the economy starting booming and our biz absolutely surged. That ended the pissing and moaning about Clinton. In fact, it sort of ended the political discussion at work, because the heavy hitters couldn't admit that under Clinton, the economy was doing well, so political chat became un-cool at the office ("If you don't have something bad to say, don't say anything at all!").

Then, OJ killed a couple of people and the talk reignited and moved on to other things...

6. Meh. Whatever. If the economy improves and unemployment goes down,
Obama wins re-election. It's that simple. No other arguments short of us having our pants downs during a terrorist attack will matter.
