to the families of those who have died, with thoughts he selects carefully himself, and he signs them himself.

Of course, I wouldn't expect him to attend the funerals. If he did, he would be so busy attending funerals and traveling he'd have no time for anything else. But a thoughtful letter that shows he doesn't take lightly the sacrifice such persons have made...I think that says something about the man.

No, he's not perfect. No, he hasn't done everything he's promised or suggested he would as yet. But I don't expect he'll have accomplished it all in nine or ten months.

A funeral is a private affair for the family and close friends. For any POTUS to attend an otherwise solemn and very personal ceremony, would turn it into a circus made up of his entourage of bodyguards, the media, protesters, and lookey-loos.

As a Viet Nam era combat veteran, I respect our President's decision not to intrude on our fallen comrades' final moments with their families and friends.

Clinton never attended a military funeral. I think Carter attended one, from a hostage crisis death, not a war. He attended only one, as a show of support. Bush never attended one, as you noted.
