Obama To Sign Hate Crimes Bill Wednesday, But Who Cares
I guess positive news about Barack Obama and campaign promises being delivered, are not very attractive here and on every "Liberal" site/blog around. And yet, this president just keep moving forward and changing things virtually every day. Like this mega-important bill:

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/10/promises-kept-obama-to-sign-hate-crimes-bill-wednesday.php?ref=fpb

One of those big changes President Obama and the Democrats promised during the election is about to become law.
Last week the Senate gave final passage to the bill authorizing spending for the Department of Defense, which included a provision creating a hate crimes designation.
An administration official tells TPMDC Obama will sign the bill at the White House Wednesday. It is named for Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who was beaten to death in 1998.
He also will host a reception with gay rights groups and civil rights leaders commemorating the occasion. TPMDC has learned that Matt's mom Judy and brother Logan will attend the signing ceremony.
Last week, the president kept another campaign promise by signing a bill authorizing advanced funding for the Veterans Administration.

5. My Congressman is Jared Polis. The other night at a town hall meeting he was ECSTATIC about this.
He wasn't quite as hopeful about DOMA, but did seem to indicate that ENDA will go through this year.

8. There's no need for the flamebaity tone. This is great news
and was discussed extensively in the LGBT forum when it happened, garnering more recs than any thread there in weeks.

10. Don't pay any mind to the barbiturate left.
We could establish utopia but they'd continue to scream bloody murder about something, ANYTHING! It's like being strung out on the junk. Can't live without it.

11. Like your post, but your tone sucks.
A lot of what President Obama accomplishes in heralded here and other sites.

Might want to poke around and read a bit before making pronouncements about a board you just joined.

24. The OP has a point
One doesn't need a bunch of posts accumulated to one's profile to be observant.

Some positive developments have been pissed on at GD: P because they weren't important "enough" to the people doing the pissing.

14. Don't be bitter
It's one of the very, very few genuinely positive, pro-LGBT developments to come out of the administration. Well, it came out of Congress, actually. But, hey, I'll pretend the President did some work other than sign it. I'm a giver.

Why shit all over even that?

Eesh. Some people never want gay anything to be nice.

30. Obama has been doing "sneaky" stuff like this since he took over
the country.
The mess in congress gets all the attention, while the President keeps changing the country for the better.
Good post, OP.

31. that may be a valid point overall but it is nothing short of ludicrious in this instance
He hasn't signed anything yet and it is Congress who passed the bill. I am not saying Obama deserves no credit but this is certainly not a case of Congress being a mess and Obama saving the day.

32. No, congress is drawing the attention away from the WH. No so much in this instance, I agree, but
Edited on Wed Oct-28-09 08:31 AM by old mark
overall. How many times did we see Obama signing or declaring or ordering some change that passed with little notice from the media, while some half wit congressperson's inane comment got headlines for a week? Is it O's strategy? Just wondering.
FWIW, I have been ludicrous before, and I don't mind it a bit.

33. "The measure is attached to a must-pass $680 billion defense policy bill."
Unfortunately passing hate crimes would have to be conditional with a lot more money to keep the war machine going.

Sad. Awfully sad.

35. They keep bringing up Martin Luther King
and how the original hate crimes was legislation was passed after his assassination.

Knowing what he thought about the war in Viet Nam, I wonder what his comments would be about this version of the hate crime bill being passed with hundreds of billions of dollars to kill people who have done us no harm.

I don't wonder actually. I pretty much know what he'd think about it.

But, hundreds of billions more for the war budget isn't.
