Obama Announces Fmr. Sen. Chuck Hagel As Co-Chair Of Intelligence Advisory Board

Jillian Rayfield

President Obama announced today that former Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) will co-chair the President's Intelligence Advisory Board.

In a meeting with senior leadership of the intelligence community, the President said that Hagel will serve as co-chairman of the board with former Senator David Boren (D-OK).

Obama said of the appointments:

I'm very pleased that these two distinguished Americans have agreed to serve as co-chairmen of my Intelligence Advisory Board. They have been leading voices on intelligence and security issues, and they represent the bipartisan consensus for a strong and smart national security policy.

Hagel said in his remarks: "I appreciate the privilege and opportunity that President Obama has given me to co-chair the President's Intelligence Advisory Board. I look forward to working on behalf of our country to help build a more secure America."

4. Despite being a "voice of reason" (as some like to call him)...
Chuck Hagel is a solid Republican Conservative,
but he'll fit right in on Obama's Team.

5. Hagel may be conservative but is not for a surge on Afghanistan.

He is highly skeptical. Better then some of the other so called Dems out there on that issue.

7.  I have some difficulty
...at joining in the celebration over another Republican in the Obama Administration.

It wouldn't be so bad if there were some attempt to include a few Democrats from the Democratic Wing of the Party.....but there isn't even the appearance of an attempt.
THAT door has been closed since Day One.

23. Obama himself...
..PRETENDED to be from the Democratic Wing,
or more truthfully, Progressives hoped to believe that Obama was from the Democratic Wing.
We KNEW Hillary wasn't, so the only other alternative was Hope.

Here is The Team Obama plays for:

The DLC New Team
Progressives Need Not Apply

Republicans and Health Insurance Lobbyists have better access to The White House.
The Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party has been reduced to writing letters to The White House.

10. David Boren is the other co-chair of the panel.
I don't think Obama chose Hagel because he's trying to be bipartisan, in this case. I'm guessing he chose Hagel because he has recent experience in intelligence and foreign policy matters, Obama knows and trusts him, and he's not going to cost a Dem seat.

16. Not at all sure about it, but
I seem to recall reading that this board is supposed to be, at least by tradition, bi-partisan. Also, given how good and close to the way of thinking of the best dems on these kind of issues Hagel is, he fact that he still has an R after his name is completely irrelevant IMHO.

18. DU is a "bi-partisan board"?
I don't think so.

Chuck Hagel may not be a mouth breathing NeoCon, but he IS a "Republican" and a "Conservative".
He only LOOKS "reasonable" compared to the most of the pigs in HIS party.

DU has shifted to The Right over the last few years due to the influx of low information "Centrist/Moderate" Party Loyalists who think that "seeking bi-partisan consensus" is a good idea, but in no way is DU a "Bi-Partisan" board.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone
