Obama's visit to Dover triggers a sickening hate fest at freerepublic.
With this creep everything is PR and politics. A charade for the masses.
This move is designed to counterbalance 0bama’s unmanly dithering and cowardice on Afghanistan

I thought we were supposed to view all this out in the open? Under Bush we were told the public HAS to know and see, everyday, every night.

Dover AFB is sacred ground here in Delaware. This is where we receive the battle dead and prepare them for transport to their families across the nation. The devotion and care these folks show is incredible to the remains of our fallen soldiers.
How dare he desecrate it with his unworthy presence.
This is just a photo-op to show him “struggling mightily’ with his “grave decisions” about sending our troops “into harm’s way”.
I am about to launch into projectile vomiting.

He goes to gloat over his handiwork. Evil, sniveling, lying, islamic b@st@rd!!@!!

It’s too late for this bastard to gain any friends in our
military. They see him for what he is.
His fakery is very
plain to the troops.

He honors them in the traditional liberal way: by throwing feces and urine on them.

GUILT MADE HIM GO !!
DO THE MILITARY A FAVOR ....GO BACK TO KENYA....UBAMA !!

I don’t know about “guilt”. I think it is a fake attempt at damage control.
I’ll contribute to his ticket home to Kenya.
He is not an American! He has no concept of what it even
means to be an American..he is an enemy of America and is
deceptively doing all his masters order him to do. His
narcissism is his guide.

3. They are sick, twisted people.
Bush wouldn't even allow the coffins to be photographed.

And let's not forget their glorious George W. Bush is the one responsible for all these deaths. He started a war that didn't need to be fought, and should not have been fought, based on lies.

Is there any greater crime to humanity?

Obama was handed a steaming hot sack of shit in January 2009, courtesy of George W. Bush and 8 years of Republican "leadership." Bury the GOP and salt the Earth so they may never rise again to do damage to the world.

Bunch of birther wack jobs.

Oh, and don't you love how they accuse him of "unmanly dithering"? Because, you see, REAL men never consider the options before they make a decision. They don't think; they don't weigh all the alternatives and seriously worry about whether they're doing the right thing. They just make the decision and issue the command. So let it be written! So let it be done! Hang the possible consequences, I've made up my mind and that is IT!!!! That's the "MANLY" way to make decisions!

But he would be photographed peeking under a table looking for those WMDs while he joked about it in public.
But joking about something he lied about is alright even though US troops were getting killed because of it.

So why do the conservative like Bush?

5. "...he shouted before diving off the edge of the cliff...."
Unbelievable. "He has no concept of what it even means to be an American"

To these sick puppies, being a "real American" means letting our war dead be shipped home with no presidential
acknowledgment whatsoever of their sacrifice (and for what?), and just some of the usual lip service with (live)
soldiers playing on instruments during the photo ops.

Bush avoided this scene like the plague. Obama says he is not pretend these fallen soldiers don't exist, but
flies up to honor them, and the radical right blows its collective stack.

Just amazing. Their concept of a real American was G.W. Bush, I suppose. We will just have to differ on what
we perceive to be "real."

Hell he wouldn't even allow pictures come from there. And let's face it - Dover isn't that far away from DC.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091029/ap_on_re_us/us_obama_fallen_soldiers
The dramatic image of a president on the tarmac was a portrait not witnessed in years. Former pResident George W. Bush spent lots of time with grieving military families but never went to Dover to meet the remains coming off the cargo plane. Obama did so with the weight of knowing he may soon send more troops off to war.

They use the passive voice, but that's what they mean. Under Bush, WE told them the public HAS to know and see, every day, every night. But they didn't agree, because they thought it was more "dignified" and "respectful of the dead" to have those bodies return under the cover of darkness. You know, because the troops' sacrifice was so noble and holy that the return of their bodies was best achieved quietly and privately and without any attention from anyone called to it. :sarcasm:

I didn't start hating republicons until I watched them steal an election and then had the nerve to pretend that they were outraged.

They pretend that they love life but they always want to take someone's life. THey love life so they are against abortions so they take another life of a Doctor because they love life..a bunch of damn hypocrites. They love life but they will bomb another country and innocent men, women and children just to get Sadaam husseing.

A lot of their spokespeople are so called religious people and hate every damn race in the country. A lot of the black republicons hate their own race and will say every mean and racist sterotype against their own people and took money from bush to spread their lies in the churches there is a lot more reason why I hate Bush/Cheney and Republicons and I sure as hell won't deny it!!!

34. Does anyone know the decorum...
...regarding the President's salute? I know that he has the privilege of returning a salute. But to offer one? Who is superior in rank to the President? Perhaps it's his way of saying, I am subordinate to these dead men because of their sacrifice. If that's the rationale, then it's lovely thing.

Of course, this is regardless of the value of this "war." That is another discussion entirely. I don't think it's wrong to compartmentalize the solemnity of this situation versus the separate issue of the war itself.

The President will never, or hardly ever, as evidenced by the poster above who told of his co-worker, be recognized as doing anything decent by his political antagonists. They despise him as much as many here despise his predecessor--or maybe more so. I am constantly dismayed by the vitriol I see elsewhere, in right-wing environs, on the web.

As a Cold-War-era Army Brat, I am still moved by these occasions, and I applaud the President here.

Edited on Fri Oct-30-09 09:53 AM by maxrandb
Yes, protocol usually dictates that the junior person initiate the salute, but as an officer, I'll salute junior folks first if needed. Sometimes their busy and don't see you, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with a senior greeting a junior with a salute.

Additionally, if you happen to be on a military base around 0800 for "colors", or at a ballgame where the National Anthem is played. It is customary to stop, stand at attention and salute the flag as it is raised, and remain at salute until "ready too" is sounded.

In this case, I think the president is not only saluting the fallen military member, he is also saluting the "colors" the Soldier, Sailor, Airmen or Marine was fighting under.

57. Obama catches hell from
both sides and the middle. If he decided he didn't want to run for re election I would completely understand. He is trying to do his best to make a difference and dig us out of this shit hole and his best just isn't good enough for some of us. Maybe he should just say, "to hell with it I'm done." Vote for whomever you like and if a far RW POS wins the election you all can deal with it. I have read some particularly mean comments from the LGBT community. I was watching Wanda Sykes last night and even she said she doesn't like the fact that gay rights has been put on the back burner but she understands the economy, health care and two wars comes first. I do think DADT should be repealed now because our soldiers are being kicked out of the military. Even if Obama gets everything done and we come out on top the far right will rewrite history and say he was the worst President ever.

They have been crawling out from under rocks since Obama was elected.

Hubby goes hunting with a couple of long-time Texan buddies (liberals) every year; they've
been joined by some good 'ole boy types the last couple of years. Hubby told me he's seriously
thinking about not going next year; the red-necks thought it was great fun to tell
"kill the n*@@er" jokes when they were playing poker on this year's hunt. Hubby went right back at them,
making some crude remarks about Jesus (so crude he wouldn't repeat them to me) which got
them to shut up.

Still, insulting someone's religion based on a guy who's long dead isn't
the same as taking pleasure in joking about killing the President of the United States--
as a hate crime.

64. Of course they hate him for Dover.
It highlights another piece of the Failtrain that Bush/Cheney so successfully hid for all those years.

They're mistaking the secrecy for solemnity, though, having bought into the lie that there are some things We The people shouldn't question.

65. The way to show real concern for
the troops and dead soldiers is to stop the wars. I'm sceptical about the motives of politicians who cozy up to the military, in any form. Bush used to visit the hospitals where the soldiers he had sent into battle based on lies were getting treated for missing arms and legs. Used to have cry sessions with them. I thought, you sick phony bastard.

Did Obama make these visits while he was in Congress?

68. yes he did. And he consistently advanced legislation for vets when McLame was against it.
It used to blow my mind when McLame would vote against veterans issues, I mean, WTF?
They were only of use to him as cannon fodder.

Obama consistently supported veterans bills and he visited the troops overseas as a senator (before he was a candidate) - I remember watching him play basketball with them.

I know he visited wounded troops at Walter Reed in June '08: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/06/28/obama-visits-walter-reed/

and overseas in Baghdad a month later on a joint trip: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/07/27/ftn/main4297769.shtml

Those are the times I remember off the top of my head, I'm sure there are others.

Any elected official visiting troops anywhere is always a good thing (although I thought Bush's crocodile tears were phony as hell too).

Obama's visit to Dover was classy as hell and I think he should do it more than once.
