Obama: I’m “Pleased” That House Health Care Bill Has Public Option

Obama’s statement on the passage of the House health care bill explicitly singles out the public option as one of the bill’s primary achievements:

The House legislation includes critical reforms to the insurance industry, so that Americans will no longer have to worry that they will be denied coverage, or that their coverage will be dropped or watered down when they need it most. I’m also pleased that the bill includes a public option offered in an exchange. As I’ve said throughout this process, a public option that competes with private insurers is the best way to ensure choice and competition that are so badly needed in today’s market. And the House bill clearly meets two of the fundamental criteria I have set out: it is fully paid for and will reduce the deficit in the long term.

Nancy Pelosi has delivered a House bill with a real, live public plan in it, albeit not the one preferred by progressives. Harry Reid has announced his intention to put one in the Senate bill. Now the question becomes whether Obama will step in and get it across the finish line.

35. Oh it's historic. But so was the Iraq war vote. And they share some simularities.
Both "pro" groups claim humanitarian motivations.

Both votes bestow huge economic benefits on certain non-productive corporations. (defense in the first and insurance in the later)

And the followers of the people pushing both votes are positive the motivations of their leaders are pure and that there is no alternative which can be realistically pursued. Both groups of followers are positive it must be done and it must be done now or all is lost.

The bush initiative went totally wrong when he refused the UN Arms inspectors a seat at the table. As a result, the whole initiative went horribly and completely wrong.

The Obama administration made the same mistake by refusing the 100 million Americans who support single payer a place at the table to present their views. They were silenced.

I happen to think both initiatives are/were wrong and both will have long term bad consequences.

I don't expect you to see that. In fact, the true believers never waiver. Look at Iraq. The believers still believe. And you will too, long after this insurance company bailout blows up in your face.

12. Don't do this.
Seriously.

It starts what I like to call the "Cycle of Shit".

1) OP posts something good that President Obama's just done.
2) One of the earliest replies is "Well, this is excellent news, but the Hate Obama First crowd will be screaming IT'S NOT ENOUGH within moments!"
3) Reply to that reply is "Excuuuuuuuuse me for not blindly supporting the President!"
4) Reply to THAT reply is "Well, my good chum, you have a POSTING HISTORY of posting negative threads about President Obama!"

And so on. Eventually, the thread devolves into something lower than shit and Skinner dies a little inside.

Don't do this. The President's done many good things, but there are many good things he's promised to do that he hasn't done yet.

45. When Obama invited the insurance lobby and disinvited the single payer advocates to the table
Edited on Thu Oct-29-09 01:52 PM by John Q. Citizen
it became crystal clear to anyone paying attention that what would be packaged and sold as reform would in reality be an insurance industry bonanza.

That's what the current bill is.

There is a lot of blame to go around, some of it to the blue dogs.
But Obama is also to blame. As soon as he cut his back-room deals with the insurance industry and big pharma, and the hospitals, it became clear.

What was going to be packaged and sold as reform, was in fact going to be a bonanza for the health care industrial complex.

This bill is very much like Romney Care, what they have in MA. Romney Care is failing. MA has some of the most expensive insurance rates in the country, and people are having their benefits cut because it's unaffordable.

I didn't vote for Romney, and I don't want Romney Care. It's another bogus market based solution that doesn't work. No!

47. Single Payer is not a Reality.
Just seeing how hard it is to get a Public Option goes to show how unrealistic Single Payer is in this country.

Unless there is strong Campaign Finance Reform, there will never be Single Payer. Too much of Congress is in their pockets. Its reality. Its still hard for some to see it though.

49. I'm no longer voting for them. That's what the upshot is. Until people say no, they will continue to
screw us.

I don't blame the insurance industry for bribing our law makers, since it's legal to commit bribery if you are an insurance company, and I don't blame the Democrats for taking the bribes and doing their bidding, since it's legal also.

I blame myself and the other voters who would actually cast a vote for these criminal pricks.

No more.

I really don't need Obama to get us Romney Care after all do I? I would have voted for Romney if I wanted Romney Care.

I suggest you take the pony out of your ass. It is interfering with your thinking.

53. He keeps his detailed opinions on healthcare reform close to the vest.
There must be some reason for that. But I would think that behind the scenes, he and his staff are making calls left and right (er, I mean left and left), letting people know what the White House would "like." And he lets Pelosi and Reid do the down and gritty work of getting people aligned and hashing out details.

I hope Obama has dropped his expectations of being able to work with those on the right, now that he's seen what they're all about: not the country, not the citizens.
