Republican AG King's top foes: Top GOP figures
Alabama Attorney General Troy King is running for re-election while feuding with influential Republicans who would normally be his allies, including the top three GOP officeholders in the state.

That raises the prospect of an incumbent attorney general losing his party's primary for the first time since Alabama became a viable two-party state three decades ago.

The erosion of his top-tier Republican support:

-Alabama's two Republican U.S. senators supported King financially in his 2006 campaign. For the 2010 election, they are helping his Republican primary opponent, Luther Strange.

-King was legal adviser to Republican Gov. Bob Riley until the governor appointed him to a vacancy in the attorney general's office in 2004. In the years since, their relationship has gone from close to caustic.

-A Republican U.S. attorney used a grand jury in Montgomery to question several present and former members of King's staff about the activities of his office. The panel took no action before the U.S. attorney left office in June.
