Republican victory expected at gubernatorial and congressional polls

Barack Obama faces a likely political bruising today as Virginia votes for a new governor in an election that the Republican candidate looks set to win. The contest takes place exactly one year after the state broke with decades of tradition by helping to put a Democrat
in the White House.

In what is otherwise a quiet year electorally, the results from Virginia this evening will inevitably be pored over for signs that the coalition built by the Obama campaign in 2008, which included many independents and first-time voters, is eroding. All eyes will also be on another race for governor in New Jersey and an unexpectedly eventful congressional contest in northern New York that has exposed ominous fissures in the Republican ranks.

2. right it's Obama's fault. Governors all over the country are in trouble because of the economy

and state issues. Dems have controlled the VA governorship for several years now and voters want a change. It's normal. Also our nominee for governor ran a horrid campaign. I'll tell you this though, if the Dem nominee in VA somehow gets within five points of winning I will consider that a win for the Dems. The results in VA have little to do with Obama. If he were on ballot AA voters would be enthused and turn out in record numbers (again) which would make the state competitive.

Obama isn't on the ballot anywhere. Why does the corporate media assume that just because HE inspired and brought enough people together enough people to win Virginia last year during a major Presidential election that ANY Democrat should be able to ride his coattails a year later and win the Governorship? :shrug:

9. I'm in NJ.

Furthermore, Corzine is my neighbor. He will probably win by a small margin. Not because he has been a particularly good governor, but the Democratic political machinery in NJ is well oiled and he spent millions out of his own money.

My prediction is that it will be 3 to 1 Republican wins: VA, upstate NY and NYC for the Repugs and NJ for the Dems.

29. If Owens wins NY-23, then the Dems won 2 out of 4 major races today.

No one talks about the Special Election in CA but I think we will win that. So it would be an even match. No one wins or loses, just two bad Dem, candidates and if things hold up in NY, Sarah Palin (LOL!).

30. Some of the races seemed clear that Republicans were going to win and well i just dont

think having Obama stump would have helped much because some of these democrats were lousy choices. Here's hoping though that Obama takes the left more seriously and not pander to the right and their corporate owners so much any more....inspire his base to continue to support him (by even coming out to vote for even these weak democrats) by showing actions for positive, dramatic change. For me, if it wasnt for the ongoing Geitner/WH bank scam i would have held my nose and gone out to vote for the democrat instead of staying home.
