Josh Marshall: NJ Overview
NJ Overview

Listening to Chris Christie's acceptance speech, I'm only now realizing the pure depth of Jon Corzine's unpopularity. This has to be the worst speech I've ever heard. This guy is seriously not ready for prime time. And yet, he just got elected.

Summary: NJ really screwed up.

Christie is as corrupt as they come.

I'mnot sure you can blame people when given the choice of corrupt or stupid for picking stupid -- especially in light on Blago in
Illinois having occured in the last year

3. I am VERY glad that I do not live in NJ.
Everyone is screaming for tax cuts...but they are going to be even angrier when the services they are used to having are cut to the bone after the tax cuts they want leave no money for them..

I am really not sure why Corzine is so disliked. I guess it could be taxes...but do those folks expect to have all the state services they enjoy without having to pay for them??
I think Corzine is more a victim of the economy than anything else. A huge percentage of the financial area employees live in NJ.

15. We slashed our property taxes in CA
and we have the schools, roads, bridges and budgets to show for it.

be careful what you ask for New Jersey. you have a nice state there with good schools, roads and state services though you have high property taxes. if you cut them and gut your schools, all the money you save, you'll end up spending on private schools and prisons just as we do in CA.

word to the wise folks.

21. I think it was mostly the taxes. The taxes are high. But I predict Christie will last only one term.
Once he starts cutting and slashing people will start to complain about that too.

30. Tonight in the Bay Area, in city after city, we're raising our property taxes to improve our schools
some 30 years after passing Proposition 13 which limited those taxes to 1% of assessed value based on when you bought with no more than 2% increase allowed per year.

the gutting of our schools that eventually happened as a result of Prop. 13, which is why many of my neighbors pay $800/year in property taxes on properties worth $400k, was done in favor of cutting property taxes at any cost. and now we are faced with undoing it or instead of running schools, running warehouse day care centers for children.

New Jersey, don't make our mistake, don't follow us down the path of hurting our children and hurting our future to save some money each year --we are paying in dollars for every dollar we've saved in taxes.

5. Prediction:
Lame duck session passes marriage equality and Christie spends most of his term fighting the legislators over this social issue, further alienating the Republican Party in New Jersey.

7. The dem party pumped a shit load of money into NJ as did Corzine..
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 11:46 PM by flyarm
people in this state are pissed..and they are not taking it anymore!

Unemployment through the roof , while the goldman boys reap a shit load of tax payer money killed Corzine in this state! He is known here as the Goldman gov.

Many many dems i know stayed home and did not vote today.

I live in 2 states but do not vote in NJ any longer, for many years now..but i helped found a dem club here and i have heard over and over dems saying they were not going to vote , because they are damn pissed.
Real liberals and progressives are angry.

Note to dem party ..ignore your base and keep pandering to the DLC types at your peril!

Oh and I was a guest at Corzine's inaugeration when he was elected, because of the work I have done in the State of NJ for many many years.

34. Really? I worked GOTV in NJ and have heard no one refer to Gov. Corzine as "the Goldman gov"
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 08:00 AM by ClarkUSA
Exit polls in VA and NJ firmly debunk what you're saying. Deeds was a terrible candidate and Corzine was a weak one.
The state of the economy damaged incumbents (e.g., Gov. Bloomberg almost lost his re-election to a no-name Democratic
opponent who ran a horrible campaign).

There's also an historic trend where the governorships in NJ and VA tend to go to the party which lost the White House (see
VA and NJ in 2000). Independents broke against the incumbent governors, as they always do at these times.

Democrats did gain two House seats, one of which (NY-23) was highly-contested and considered a bellwether judgment on
Presidential policy. Perhaps you need to take a deep breath and focus on that.

8. People blame incumbants for what happens on their watch
and New Jersey just had corruption scandals so extensive that they made a name for the state around the world!

Seriously- even in Australia.

10. NJ
MSNBC's exit polls have a 57 percent approval for Obama. This was not about him but a antiCorzine vote.
Some of the voters who polled saying they would vote for Daggert came home for Christie. This Is not a
landslide for Christie.a 4 point win against a Governor with 35 percent approval Is not great.

If Christie opts out of stimulas and health care If a Public opotion opt happens. He will be a one
term governor.Corzine was a one term governor.

31. He's like "Sopranos" corrupt! I think NJ voters will come to regret their vote.
My Dad lives in Atlantic City and he was very active for Corzine, even though Corzine had his issues. This guy was very unpopular. That's why Christie won, coupled with the fact that the Independent probably siphoned voted from Corzine.

My state, South Carolina holds those honors now. On the bright side, they're looking to impeach Sanford. If Christie is as bad as y'all claim, he might not even be a one-term governor.
