White House official slams Dem Rep. Anthony Weiner
Wednesday, November 04, 2009

White House official slams Democratic Cong. Anthony Weiner, saying he should have "manned-up" in NY Mayor's race. Just sexist or homophobic too?

by Joe Sudbay (DC) on 11/04/2009 10:32:00 AM

Manned up? So is the White House saying that Weiner is acting like a woman or a gay? And which one does our White House find worse?

On the day after a huge civil rights defeat for the gay and lesbian Americans, in a battle in which we were abandoned by President Obama and the Democratic National Committee, it's telling that they White House is using effeminate slurs to defame Democrats who question why the President didn't bother lifting a finger to help in a far too many races.

Mayor Bloomberg won yesterday, but not by much. The President of the United States, who is also the leader of the Democratic Party, didn't really help the Democratic candidate for mayor in New York, Bill Thompson. When Rep. Anthony Weiner pointed that out, someone at the White House shot back with a very nasty, and rather homophobic, attack on the Congressman from New York.

3. Definitely not a homohateful quote
I've known some straight men who are just a bunch of whiny-babies. I've known gay men who are diligent, sober, and quick to anger. Guess which folks I get along with better?

Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 05:11 PM by BrklynLiberal
It sure did nto seem to me that the powers that be in the Democratic Party were very interested in helping Thompson. Weiner was absolutely right...3 visits by the President to Corzine and none to NYC? Hmmmmm He could have come over on the PATH train.

I wonder if Weiner's outspoken support of single payer might have someone, somewhere upset enough to start stories like this? And it might not even have been a Democrat.

9. Sorry, not buying into it.
I worked on the Thompson campaign, and am very proud of how close we came to victory over the $100,000,000 Bloomberg campaign. Thompson was written off for lost long ago, but we kept on keepin' on, and it turned out to be a very close race considering the massive disparities in expenditures. Point being, "man up" is just today's current catch phrase. It was "cowboy up" a few years ago. If you're going to get all hot and bothered over this remark, you're too focused on the wrong things.

If the White House meant that Weiner didn't show enough intestinal fortitude, the White House could have fucking said so.

The White House wouldn't have said this about a woman without apologizing immediately; therefore, it's sexist.

44. 1. No one knows if the WH really said it. 2. It doesn't imply men are superior to women in any way
Anyone with a drop of common sense and and sense of modern social skills would know that the use of such an ordinary figure of speech would not imply anything sexist.

Its silliness to make anything out of the usage of such a common term, period.

what makes this White House official, well, Official? What does he "official" over, the mops, the brooms, the pastry, the fax machine, the filing cabinet, the key board?

At one time, you had to back up your anonymous source with another source that was not anonymous. Now the jackals just report anonymous sources, or back the anonymous report with other anonymous sources.

Now all we get is gossip. Politico should be called The Backyard Fence.

38. Weiner: 'We got walloped'

There is some truth in what Weiner says and it was not the most smart thing for the WH official to say.

.................................

.........It is amazing how often anonymous White House officials attack other Democrats and Democratic allies. And "manned-up? Sounds like a lot like "sissy." Weiner only pointed out the obvious. The White House should have stood up and supported the Democratic candidate, and supported the Democratic base in other states as well...............

'We got walloped'

Two big questions loom in the wake of the 2009 elections. The first is whether Barack Obama learned anything new about American voters. The second is whether American voters will soon learn something new about Obama.

For a president who likes always to convey confidence and cool, the returns will test his willingness and capacity for self-critique and self-correction.

So far, Obama’s White House has responded to the results — flaming defeats for Democratic gubernatorial nominees in Virginia and New Jersey, along with better news in the N.Y. 23 special congressional election — exclusively with self-justification.

Obama himself did not mention the elephant in the room Wednesday in public appearances in Wisconsin. His silence came even though he had immersed himself heavily in the New Jersey race in particular, only to see incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine lose a traditionally Democratic state.

........................

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1109/Bloombergs_rebuke.html

“Maybe one of those Corzine trips could have been better spent in New York. Who knows?" remarked New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, who weighed his own run for mayor, referring to the White House’s devout attention to the New Jersey contest.

“Maybe Anthony Weiner should have manned-up and run against Michael Bloomberg,” shot back a White House official, who attributed the night’s results across the board to anti-incumbent fervor.

39. That was a lame response from the WH.
Weiner is right, Obama could have made at least one appearance for Thompson. His endorsement was half hearted at best. Despite the almost 100M that Bloomberg spent out of his own pocket, he only won by 5%. If half the effort had been spent in NYC that was spent in NJ, maybe Thompson would have won.

I suppose, though, that some will be on the lookout for gay slurs directed at Weiner, given that he and his fiancee Huma Abedin are themselves the subjects of gay rumors.
