Freep Spin on Fort Hood Shooting: "Obama's Frightening Insensitivity"
I watched Obama's speech when he talked about the horrific events at Fort Hood:

"These are men and women who have made the selfless and courageous decision to risk and at times give their lives to the rest of us on a daily basis," the president continued. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."

Obama's remarks came at the conclusion of the Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Interior Department and the White House. He told his listeners – leaders from many of the 564 federally recognized American Indian tribes – that he had discarded his prepared comments in light of the breaking news.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29204.html

Not all the details were in yet (as of this writing, they still aren't) and as I watched Obama's speech, I could tell he was troubled and was eloquent in trying to honor those who died, were hurt and everyone else connected with the incident.

So what do we find linked on the Drudge Report this morning? What will the Freeper Echo Chamber say today about Obama's reaction? Here's a sample:

A bad week for Democrats compounded by an awful moment for Barack Obama.
By ROBERT A. GEORGE

After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance.

(snip)

At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?

Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That's the least that should occur.

(snip)

All the president's men (and women) fell down on the job Thursday. And Democrats across the country have real reason to panic.

Obviously, if you hate Obama, you would come up with this kind of careless conjecture to make yourself "feel better".

What's next? All Muslims are evil, so we need to go help the people of Afghanistan?

4. Fact is, if Jesus himself praised Pres. Obama, republicans would screech
whine bitch complain about and at Jesus.

IF Pres. Obama had a different letter of the alphabet behind his name ie (r), THEN republicans would be thrilled with their incredible president.

PARTY. UBER. ALLES.

PERIOD.

THAT is the republican platform.

6. One Soldier snaps and kills twenty fewer people that the Virginia Tech Tragedy ...
and we now have "terrorism" if not another "9/11?"

Good luck with pushing that bunk you idiots.

My heart goes out to the families but, not unexpected, he couldn't kill more than 13 people because on a military base there's always an MP within sight who's armed. Thank goodness that the civilian hired security people were close by and shot him four times.

I wonder if he has brain stem trauma being that he's on a ventilator?

Nonetheless, this is NOT political, but the horrendous act of a mentally ill Soldier who snapped.

I wish the whorish M$M would stop pushing the Muslim angle. If anyone is harmed or killed in future Muslim "hate crimes" they will have blood on their hands.

The guy acted alone and was as mentally ill as the young man of Korean ancestry who killed over 30 people a few years ago at Virginia Tech.

It's hard to assimilate but IMO, this is not terrorism - it was personal, not political. :(

8. And a solider already killed 5 people on a base in Iraq in May.
This is not another 9/11, it is a mentally disturbed man turning on his fellow soldiers and opening fire on them. If this man did not belong to any "terrorist cell", which it does not seem like he did, then it is the act of a lone crazy person killing others. Kind of like the white supremacist who killed the people at the museum in DC early this year.

23. And most of this is the leftover consequences..
and residue of W and they pretend as though his policies have nothing to do with it. The jobs lost are due to him and the republicons. Listen to Grover Norquist, they thought the plan was working but they didn't count on a Dem winning the whitehouse.

I know when the Obama admin began to see what was left they said WTF!!! A lot of these people are now awake that they have lost their jobs and now want to blame it on President Obama..

Not all murders have the same motives, or are you not aware of that?

7. I'll say President Obama probably should have led with the tragedy
Bit of a gaffe IMHO. But the huge difference here is that the incident at Fort Hood was already over while on 9-11 the country was still under attack and needed a President in command desparately. Doofus Bush first went in to the class room after hearing about the first plane - and don't forget he had been warned by that infamous Aug 6th PDB and other warnings. Then Bush sat there for 7+ minutes after Card informed him of the second plane with that deer-in-the-headlights look. And as we all know later made the lame-ass excuse he didn't want to panic the 2nd graders. And the MSM didn't make one damn criticism of it and to this day have let it slide.

9. The shout outs definitely were a little oddly placed
Then again who can prepare for something like this? I'm sure Obama was just as shocked and confused as everyone else, and we all just muddle through as best we can.

30. And I just noticed that he stated the wrong medal...
Wasn't Joe Medicine Crow awarded the Medal of Freedom? President Obama called it the Medal of Honor.

WASHINGTON - AUGUST 12: U.S. President Barack Obama (L) struggles to present the Medal of Freedom to Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow - High Bird (R) during a ceremony at the White House August 12, 2009 in Washington, DC. The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award in the United States.

26. I think he led with the closing remarks to the conference so...
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 03:16 PM by Hansel
that he could leave right away after he talked about the shooting. He was suppose to speak for much longer, but I think out of respect to the people he was addressing and their culture he choose to address them first.

Obama was not in that room to do a news conference, he was part of the conference and was leaving early because of the shooting. You are right, it was pretty much over by then and there was nothing he could do. I don't think the nation was terrified and needed him to speak to them like we were on 911. Most people were probably just trying to find out the body count, as ghoulish as it is to say.

But when I saw he remarks I knew the right was going to jump on this. I just thought, let them jump. They would have jumped on him for being rude to the attendees of the conference if he had done it the other way around.

The media hype lead to an expectation of something other than what this speech turned out to be.

18. That wasn't the point
Drudge is trying to paint Obama as someone who either doesn't care about what happened or was unable to react to a crisis situation. The prime example of this was Bush on 9/11, interpreting my post as me somehow equating the two incidents is somewhat suprising even for some of the inane things I read on DU.

19.  I think you missed my point.
For the right wing kooks to think that Obama was slow and lacking in response to Ft. Hood is just plain nuts. Of course Obama cares.

Bush sat with a stupid look on his face and showed zero leadership while the rest of America literally didn't know what was happening.

As terrible as yesterday was, it was nothing like 9/11 and George Bush's moments of indecision. The right has no room to criticize Obama on this one.

I was not disgreeing with you, and am sorry if you interpreted my post that way.
