So, when Repukes use Wedge issues, it's bad. But Democrats are allowed?
Those who oppose the Healthcare Reform Bill that the House just passed are using the Wedge Issue of Abortion to try and kill the bill.

How is this any better than what Repukes do?

And those attempting this don't even try to get the facts out. They use confusion and half-truths to accomplish their goal.

Here is the Stupak Amendment > http://www.docstoc.com/docs/15284081/Stupak-Amendment-to-HR-3962-Rev-108

Read it, and you will see that it does little more than reenforce the Hyde Amendment which has disallowed Federal subsidies for abortion coverage for the last 33 years.

It specifically allows for the purchase of non-subsidized plans which cover abortion.
It just doesn't allow you to have Abortion coverage in the same plan you purchase with a Federal subsidy.

Why are so many trying to misrepresent this?

1. That is rich. Telling liberals that defending women's rights is a RW tactic.
If it 'does little more than reenforce(sp) the Hyde Amendment', why add it?

4. have you read the amendment?
using misrepresentation to confuse people about the effect of this amendment is just as bad as the lies the Repugs spit.

You know it doesn't take anything away that currently exists.
But you don't care to let those who you are whipping into a frenzy in on this fact.

Tell the truth and let people make their decisions based on that.

11. I've read it and I stand by the statement that it is bullshit.
The Democratic Leadership is weak and corrupted that they allowed this in. It is a shame, a real shame.

15. so what does it take away? how is it different than what currently exists?
is it that you just think abortions should be subsidized?

if that is the case, you should be up front with that.
because then it is Hyde which you want to overturn...

6. Because abortion was included in the exchange and public option
They tried to say the subsidies wouldn't be the same thing as taxpayer dollars going directly to abortion, like Medicaid. Of course they are. Which is how we ended up with Stupak, which didn't need to happen.

Funny how they'll fight for ALL abortions in a middle class bill, but fuck the poor women on Medicaid.

16. But it isn't going to be
So let's not pretend this is anything more than trying to slip in abortion coverage without anybody noticing - and oops, they noticed.

On to the next plan. Mandated abortion riders on every single policy in the country so that every woman has easy access to choosing the coverage.

Why can't we, as an allegedly progressive site, all agree that this amendment is a bullshit slap in the face to women's rights. It should not be tolerated from the Democratic Party.

10. The amendment is bullshit. I pray it comes out in the Senate version
or the conference committee version but don't hold out hope. It was a matter of passing the bill or not. The blue dogs that voted for the amendment and against the bill didn't care about health care reform, they cared about getting abortion more restrictive for poor women. These blue dog idiots are not worth our time and money. They deserve to lose in their elections. What good are they to the party? Didn't even help to pass the bill in the end anyway.

who is to say that the subsidy doesn't pay for abortion then?

supplemental plans that cover abortions but are paid for with non-subsidized funds are allowed.
this is what we currently have.

29. I support Women's Rights. I support Healthcare Reform. These are not mutually exclusive.
Do you want to kill HCR just because it doesn't repeal the Hyde amendment?

That was never the intended purpose of HCR.

You should really question your own 'facts' before you tell me how I 'sound'.

30. You lose.
I support HCR. I support the bill that passed the House. Both President Obama and I oppose Stupak-Pitts:

Obama: 'This is a Health Care Bill, Not an Abortion Bill'

President Obama said today that Congress needs to change abortion-related language in the health care bill passed by the House of Representatives this weekend.

"I laid out a very simple principle, which is this is a health care bill, not an abortion bill," Obama said. "And we're not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions."

That means no federal funding of abortion.

That is what the Stupak amendment says if you had bothered to read it.
