Senator Reid will include an anti-abortion amendment in final Senate healthcare bill

Reid will likely include anti-abortion provision
Politico
November 09, 2009

Harry Reid spokesman Jim Manley signals that the senate majority leader will include a Stupak-like amendment in the final bill he is crafting. He emails:

"Senator Reid opposes abortion except in the cases of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at risk. Passing comprehensive health reform and improving access to health care will likely go a long way towards reducing the rate of unintended pregnancies and the resulting abortions.

I expect that any bill that Senator Reid brings to the floor will ensure that no federal funds are used for abortion and that the conscience rights of providers and health care facilities like Catholic Hospitals are protected."

-----------------------------

Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) is waiting for cost estimates of provisions of the bill he is cobbling together, and he hopes to bring it to the Senate floor before Thanksgiving. The battle over abortion has been more muted in the Senate, but Jim Manley, Reid's spokesman, predicted that would change.

"The debate in the House highlighted some of these issues that we're going to have to face here in the Senate, and on this issue in particular, it's something is going to have to talk with his caucus about," Manley said.

Obama left the abortion issue unmentioned Sunday when he appeared in the White House Rose Garden to give brief remarks congratulating the House on its "courageous" passage of the bill.

17. I consider a rec to be so people
will be sure to have the opportunity to see the posts about things they need, or want, to know about.

I don't approve of Reid adding the abortion verbiage, but I think people should know that
Reid is likely to do that. At least by this report.

14. so you're saying, specifically, that Reid's spokesman didn't say that in an email?
Hard to imagine he was "misquoted" in this instance, given what we know about Harry...

5. Well, that's nice.
Who is going to protect the health of young women who will be seriously hurt by this? Why to personal and largely irration beliefs of medical professionals allow them to shift the cost of their beliefs onto their unwilling patients?

pass the senate.

10. Big surprise, hey?

Well, the only question is how much worse the final Senate bill will be than the House bill and how much will the Senate destroy what's in the House bill when they meet in conference.

20. I dislike Reid immensely.
At least with Pelosi you knew she tried her best to deal with Stupak but had to bring the amendment to the floor to get the bill passed. Reid won't even try. If he lost, I would be happy.
