MADDOW: "The President today voicing some support for your position in saying that the goal is to not change the status quo in terms of abortion laws and funding for abortions. Have you had any response from the White House? Are you at all encouraged by those words from the President tonight?"

REP. DEGETTE: "I just found out about the President's statement about an hour ago, and I'm enormously encouraged, because the President is really saying what the rest of us think. This is a health care bill. This bill is designed to expand health care to 36 million Americans, and all of us have worked so hard to pass this bill for months and months. To have it torpedoed by this extraneous but very dangerous amendment is wrong, and I'm hoping that the President will sit down with us in the next few weeks and really start to hammer out some language that we can all accept."

The people who are genuinely concerned about fighting the Stupak amendment know they have an ally in the White House.

Diana DeGette is leading the fight against the Stupak amendment:

More than 40 House Democrats signed a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vowing to vote against a final health overhaul measure if it includes abortion restrictions contained in legislation approved Nov. 7, said Representative Diana DeGette.

The letter circulating among lawmakers calls “unprecedented and unacceptable” language approved by the chamber that would limit access to the procedure for people who use an insurance-purchasing exchange that would be created in pending U.S. health-care legislation.

“We will not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts women’s right to choose any further than current law,” says the letter, released by Democratic Representatives Louise Slaughter of New York and DeGette of Colorado. The two lead a caucus of lawmakers who favor abortion rights.

3. They probably unrec'd it because they think the President wanted the Stupak Amendment
It was an unfortunate bitter pill to accept to get the House bill passed and keep this thing moving. I hope they work out something.

11. The proper source of the heat should be Harry Reid right now.
He's the one deciding which abortion language will appear in the Senate draft bill.

21. Oh, there'll be PLENTY to go around, however, Barack Obama has to lead here...
This fence sitting on such a crucial issue is really, really bad.

What do all the anti-choicers here who defended Stupak yesterday have to say about it?

The world wonders.

4. The Big Tent has a lot of bad smells in it.
Curiously, the people who were insisting that Obama was going to throw women's rights under the bus are still on their 3 pm talking points from yesterday.

6. I've noticed that.
I wish they would support our president instead of the C-street Pukes who pushed this amendment.

on Stupak et al when the conference report comes up for a vote.

As long as it's an anti-Obama talking point they'll wallow in stale mud.

But, there's a lot of terrain to cover. There isn't even a draft Senate bill yet.

It would prevent millions of women from getting PRIVATE insurance that covers abortion.
