What is a Democrat?
The party that I grew up in stood up to social injustices, protected a womans right to choose, was against unjust wars, just to name a few.

I am sorry to say I don't see this this in todays Democrat.

I just want to take my ball and go home, but unfortunately todays Democrat has stolen my ball and given it to the Repukes.

DAMN IT I WANT MY PARTY BACK!

1. The party I grew up with has never been all that liberal.
The Dems I grew up with have been more centrists then liberals. Bill Clinton was the first President I legally could vote for.
The party shifted further to the center and right to win in 1992. I think it stayed there and has not changed much since then.
In fact, it has gotten worse.

9. The Party now is best described as Republican Lite.
At one time the Party did a better job of protecting
the Working Class and Poor.

Not to flame, but if we are honest the DLC and Blue Dogs
have changed the face of the party. Now they look out
for Corporate and Business Interests.

12. We can thank former DLC Chair/Golden Boy Bill Clinton for the rise of the corporate DLC in the party
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 12:01 PM by ClarkUSA
He passed DADT, DOMA, NAFTA, cheered on Bush's Iraq war from the sidelines early on (and then lied about it), deregulated the media/Wall Street, fucked up Somalia, missed getting bin Laden when there was a clear shot and "reformed" welfare to GOP satisfaction. He is the DLC's biggest success and biggest fundraiser and put to death a retarded man so he could say he was "tough on crime".

Yeah, Bubba has been a real hero to the masses in his time.

The party has never been united and never will be, we're Democrats, argue is what we do. :)

I take it you were born after the LBJ administration.

FDR created racist concentration camps, and the Democrats were the party of segregation until Truman.

They didn't even bother to care about GLBT Americans until the Clinton administration.

The two, sadly, are not mutually exclusive.

16. Either we gain control of the party are begin to build a progressive third party
from the bottom up starting with local elections, like school superintendant, city council, and mayor. From their work up to county controller, country superintendant. From there work up to state legislator, state senate, and governor, From there go into U.S. congress and U.S senate. From there President. This could take 10-20 years, but it will be worth it.

Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 12:08 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
So you must have grown up with Roosevelt. He stood up to social injustice, providing you weren't Japanese. So prior to Roosevelt was Wilson-A white supremacist. And if you're older than that...well...I guess there's Grover Cleveland.

22. The Korean conflict was first approved by the UN against the aggression of N. Korea.

As for VietNam: At least LBJ had the character not to run for re-election in 1968. The Nixon Administration owns the major escalation (Cf. "Cambodia, Illegal Invasion of") and extension of this Conflict.

20. The party is not yours to "have back."
Furthermore, the party you grew up in backed Vietnam and Korea and continued both. The party you grew up in took nearly 150 years to support women's rights. The party you grew up in took about 100 years to afford rights to african americans after slavery ended. I don't think you grew up in the party you think you did.

It's either time to take back the party - or start a new progressive party that actually cares about civil rights, peace and saving the planet.
