Souder facing GOP rival
ANGOLA — U.S. Rep. Mark Souder, R-Fort Wayne, looks like he will be getting another challenger for the Republican Party’s nomination for Indiana’s 3rd District seat in Congress.

Phil Troyer, a LaGrange County native and former staffer to Sens. Richard Lugar and Dan Coats plans to hold press conferences on Tuesday in Fort Wayne and Goshen to announce his candidacy.

Troyer, of Fort Wayne ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination in 1992 in the former 4th District when he was in college. He currently is an attorney with a financial services company.

One political Web site, The Hotline, which is part of The National Journal, indicated that conservative forces were lining up behind Troyer in a bid to unseat Souder, who has held the office as either the 4th or 3rd District since 1995 after he defeated U.S. Rep. Jill Long in 1994.

1. Now that I think about it the challenge might have more impact
than I previously thought.

At least, it will force Souder to spend what he has in his little war chest. While Hayhurst will be able to increase his campaign funds.

2. Wow
"Teabaggers unleashed!!!!!" Souder was one of the Newt Repubs swept into office in 1994 beating long-time Democratic Congresswoman Jill Long-Thompson. And he's getting a challenger???!!!
Now, could somebody PLEASE primary my right-wing congressman, Dan "shooting watermelons to prove Vince Foster was murdered" Burton (IN-6) so that we might possibly get a Democrat in this seat. Even the local right-wing newspaper (Indianapolis Star) seems to be critical of him nowadays. Oh please, oh please, oh please!!!!!!!

3. I would have thought Souder was locked in with the teabagger wing nuts. Guess not.
Either that or they really do feel the need to eat their own. This has to be good for Democratic candidates in swing districts.
