Huckabee predicts big GOP gains in '10

Former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee sees big gains for Republicans in the U.S. House next year.

Huckabee will be in Raleigh Thursday night to sign copies of his new book "A Simple Christmas" at Quail Ridge Books and Music on Wade Avenue and the N&O's Ray Martin caught up with him.

Huckabee won the Iowa caucuses in 2008, and is considered by many to be the early favorite for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. He also hosts his own Fox News show that airs on weekends at 8 p.m. In a brief interview, Huckabee reflected on his book, playing the guitar and the state of the Republican Party. He remained ambivalent about a potential White House run.

8. With all of these primary challenges from the right cropping up?

If a lot of otherwise strong Republican candidates encounter a strong primary challenge from the right, they will be severely weakened in the general election , which, of course, will NOT work to their advantage because they will have to spend more of their money to fend off their primary challengers and the wingnuts whom supported the more conservative candidates may not vote for them in the general election. It may actually end up being a WORSE year for THEM instead of us.........we can only hope!

I am a bit surprised - always thought that Nancy (the owner) was pretty liberal (though it is located "inside the beltline", meaning lots of old money Raleigh red neighborhoods).
